I know that this subject has been brought up quite a few times but it seems that it changes quite often, I am going to shop around for new Boat Insurance this year, it seems that my current carrier may be charging me more then necessary. Anyone have any recomendations?
Cole Trickle, please check your PM's.
Thanks,

I DON't KNOW WHAT KIND OF BOAT YOU HAVE, BUT IF IT's A LOW FREEBOARD JET OR V-DRIVE, GOOD LUCK. IF YOU FIND SOMEBODY TO CARRY THE POLICY, PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHO IT IS. IT's PRETTY DISCOURAGING TO READ IN ***boat THAT IF YOU HAVE ONE OF THOSE TYPES OF BOATS AND DON't HAVE A POLICY ALREADY, YOU're F*CKED. THEY PRETTY MUCH GLOSSED OVER THE ISSUE ENTIRELY, AND MOVED ON TO THE BIGGER BOATS...

Try getting insurance on a 22' tunnel with 800hp. State Farm said yeah no problem before we bought the boat and then cancelled us a month or two later. We are totally screwed. We just found out the insurance company we did find is not legit in California. :argue: I have actually spent a good part of the day trying to find someone to cover our boat. No luck at all.
GJB, you should be able to get insurance thru most anyone on your boat for pretty cheap. We only paid about $500/year for our 21' Aftershock.

State Farm, $700 year. Had a claim and it went smoothly.
Their policy pays the limit if the boat is a total. None of this NADA, going rate BS.

Best price I found was $550.00 year with State Farm out of Lake Havasu. Progressive was almost $700.00 a year. Boat is a 2006 Shockwave Tremor with a Mag/Ho...

"B" Check your home owners policy :) might already be included, if not most carriers can add it, but I would agree as far as cost goes I doubt progressive can be beat.....I just don't know how well they respond to claims :rollside: Thats who I have but I have never had to make a claim

Beat me to it Karl.......I was going to suggest the same thing... I switched from a vessel type carrier to my homeowners policy, same or better coverages and saved plenty. $420 annual premium for my 2004 23' V bottom vs about $600 something before.

we are all f*cked. Bigger boats (i.e. 28' +) with big HP are pretty difficult to insure. Only one company does them, Markel and the premiums are outrageous.

Hey Dave out of curiosity who insures your boat and how much? I just got a quote of 1653.00 a year. Just checking to see if im getting poked or not. Also I was told no layup offered on 25 ft and smaller boats.

After a good month of searching for insurance for our 35 Fountain with 600's, I got our insurance through Boat US. The premiums are comparable to Idamar but the deductible is alot cheaper. (2% instead of 4%). I didn't even have to misrepresent the HP.... Very good to work with.

Better Check the fine details of your policy. I have it from reliable sources that State Farm has no uninsured boaters coverage, It's a depreciation policy only (no Agreed upon value). No personal property coverage. Maximum of $100,000 of coverage.

Wow that's interesting. I used to work for American Family (just left them a couple of weeks ago) At that time they had a maximum speed limitation of 60 MPH. We have a 24 cat with 1000HP clean record etc. and they said no way!!!!!!

Wait till the underwriter gets wind of your boat. You will be getting a check back in the mail with a Dear John letter saying they are leaving you.
For your sake i hope not but it happened to us several times the agent says yeah no problem signed us up and shortly there after the money is returned and policy cancelled.Good driving record and not nearly the HP you have.
Good luck i hope you keep it. :)

Got a 29 deep v with a 525 for less than $900 per year. Granted, the 525 may not be considered big power.

I had mine through Am Fam also. I was cancelled after a couple of months. They said their cutoff speed was 70 or 75 mph. I am just over it.

Please let me know what part of my information is incorrect. It seems that policies are in constant flux. This was information that came to me from a State Farm agent a couple of months ago, Appreciate your help.

lets call that "medium" power... LOL ;) :D
And cats are worst than V's to get insured.
I asked about a 28V with 600 HP, it was no problem. But a cat with 600 HP... fuggetaboutit......

Try Maria Chamberlain at 9 to 9 insurance. She is one of our new employees and has been doing insurance for almost 15 years now. I was talking to her about all the trouble boaters are having with insurance companies and she said that is because all the restrictions the big companies put on their agents. She is an actuall broker and said that she wouldn't have trouble insuring the high powered boats we run. Her number is (661) 274-4860 . If someone gives her a shot let me know how you came out.

This is what I was told this morning.. Actual cash value on the boat, No uninsured boater coverage available. You would have to pay your deductible and go under the boat coverage to get it repaired/replaced. Agents binding authority is 100k but can go higher if you get approval from the underwriter. And there is personal property coverage available. So you were on the right track almost.. :)

Progressive (dropped me after a month) or State farm could not insure me because they think my 415 HP 21' jet boat will go 70mph. Fock I wish!

I have read all the pie in the sky rates that some have posted, like a tunnel with an HP500 for %00 a year fro, State Farm, etc. So for the most part the limits for majpr carriers is 300 HP and 70 MPH. If someone writes a cat/tunnel, or an HP boat for a rate that seems too good to be true, it probably is. Like some have mentioned here, u will be cancelled a month or so down the road. Premiums can go as high as $6,000+ for a twin 26+ cat with HP over 500 per engine. And in that range Markel is the only carrier that I know of that will write the policy.
Be aware that if a broker, or agent, misrepresents your boat, or u do, u may be denied a claim if and when it occurs.

Good luck with progressive........Around here the marine shops have signs posted that Progressive SUX! Won't pay or real slow at paying any claims at all.
I have Liberty Mutual Insurance for my boat..21' Rinker 175hp, 4.3 Mercruiser. Been with them for 3 Years and no problems!
