i have a casale v-drive 10 degree in a flat bottom. my question is
how much play /slop should it have or not have?
example: while in gear i can rotate prop 45 degrees back and forth. it seem's like alot to me? otherwise it works great but will clatter at part throttle.what do you guys think?

no, i do not have a whirlaway.at this point im thinking after 25+ years of use that the gears are worn out.(alot):)

I'd think you would have to have missing teeth on gears to have that much play.

It sounds as if its time to pop that puppy open and take a good hard look at things.

does'nt seem to be missing a tooth (maybe all)as their is no skip, catch or anything else abnormal other than to much play.
the v-drive otherwise runs great.however i think you guys are right!!! time to look inside!! THANKS!!
new question, can gears be replaced in boat without speacial
tools or ?

Superdave013 sells a bearing puller that makes it real slick to get the Top bearing out....

It's nice to have a bearing puller for the top bearing, but sometimes you can pry the bearing out with 2 screwdrivers. Superdave makes and sells the little bearing pullers here on the boards.

Call Menkens vdrive, 530-885-0531. Tom did a great job on my vdrive. He should be glad to talk to you.

Sounds like it has the old style 2 dog in/out set up. They have a lot of slop. You can change it to a 3 dog and most of that slop will go away.
I get my parts from Tom @ Menkens or JJ @ Beaver Fab.

Good call SD I had all kinds of play with a two dog setup (especially if they've been run for a few years) It disappeared when I put the prop release on it with a 3-dog engagement:D

76 Barron, What Dave is saying sounds correct. The clattering should only happen until you put preasure on the throttle. Taking up the slack. Also if your engine has a flexplate on it , that will make it a little worse. Call me if you would like to talk about it. TOM..530-885-0531:)
