The boards have been pretty lame lately so i took some digital pics of my old hot boat mags for your enjoyment. Now i know that these are all v-drives but keep in mind what time period we are talking about here.. well be before jets were put into boats. Be patient, enjoy the nostalgia and eventually we'll get to the jet boats.
it was the summer of 1965 and drag boat racing was growing in so.cal
Hot Boat magazine emerged to profile high performance boating.
The first issue of the the then quarterly magazine cost .75 cents and featured a fuel injected, hemi-powered flattie named Ka Ron on the cover.

Cool stuff cyclone. Keep 'em comming.
History lesson # 2:
Jets were used in boats as early as the 30s and 40s, they just didn't make any kind of an impact until 1965 when they were stuck in a few flats, a Stevens and a Carlson. Both were running berks. Schuster and Weiman, in their little Tahiti soon followed.

Cyclone, is it the HB Boards getting lame...or the HB Mag????
Personally I think the "tech areas" of this Forum have been on track...and from the emails and PM's I receive others will agree.
PS. thanks for the pics.

Great post Mike!
Hey, if I remember right the hydro in the bottom right of your first pic also was a twin v drive twin prop deal.
And people think that was something new just a few years ago.
Keep it up and if you want to use a scanner let me know.

That twin engine boat was Buzz Coats boat. Not long ago I saw a bunch of really old marine speed equipment on e bay. I contacted the seller and he was cleaning out Buzz's wife's garage. I guess he passed away sometime ago. That's him in the white tee shirt I think.

I agree, thats some really cool stuff, I especially like the Sanger add. I wish those flattie's were still available brand new today, what a time that must have been. Todays performance boats are completely uninteresting to me, 23+ feet of bland bulbous styling.

There's still a few making bad ass flats and a few making some nasty jets.

I am aware of the current jet offerings, who is still making flattie's?

You're right. Anyways, in the magazines i've got, there aren't any jets in them until the next few issues.

Cyclone, great materials, thanks for posting them. Without the pioneers Mr. Offenhauser and Mr. Vic Eddlebrock, we wouldn't have the modern day equipment that we have today. They were genius for their era. Mr. Edlebrock was a street racer in L.A., kinda funny to think about today.
And Buzz Coats always carried his tools in a coffin in the back of that hearse, pull them out on the slide tracks. For us superstitious guys, we always thought it might be bad "Karma", pulling the "Mortician" with a hearse. I believe that Buzz Coats was killed in the "Mortician".

Yeah, pretty few and far between back then. i have a '65 mag that shows a add or two for flat jets.
No scanner and our crappy digi camera broke.
Wasn't that ram style of intake actually developed by the old 'RamChargers' drag race team back in the 50s? I think it was.
Vic Edlebrock was a mover and shaker in the hot rod biz in the 40s and 50s. Lots of cool flathead speed equipment.

Went there as a kid, matter of fact that's where I first water skied. Overhead cable, Dock Start. Somehow your ski rope would grab onto the cable and WHAM!, 0 to 20 in an instant. After getting the start figured out, there was a straight stretch then the 90 degree left turns. The real bitch was having to walk back to the dock when you fell.

This is what's left. I-10 at the bottom, Riverside Dr on the Left, Pepper Ave on the right. The old Ski Land is just west (left) of the golf course. You can still make out three side of the "channel"

Hey secondchance, how was that cable thing set up? It's not real clear form the pics. That's pretty funny about having to walk back to the dock. I 'm looking at the map you posted but can't make out what's what. What have they done with the land?
Ski Land was open at least til 1982 cause I blew up a BBC in a Rogers there. For those that never got the chance to go there, it was kind of a dog legged shape thing with a island down the middle of it. It was great for skiing cause the water flattened out so quick. The thing was lined with clay and it was tough to walk in cause your feet would sink down so far. Not very deep as I remember, 5-6 feet?

It was a long time ago from the best I can remember, it was a rectangle with towers at each corner. Somthing like a snow ski poma lift over water.
