those guys got real lucky.
I grew up on a lake in N. Indiana and we took cars out on the lake all the time. The rule was to keep your doors open. If it broke through the ice it might hang up on the doors just long enough to get out.

I took a truck on a lake 1 time. I thought I heard cracking the entire time I was out there.
