anyone know the best places to get the best prices on XR drive with sportmaster?

i have heard of prices in the $7k range without the sportmaster, what should I expect for a decent price with it...
also, I had an XZ drive that I went through fairly rapidly.. I have a 27' Cougar MTR with 500HP with a Whipple, 6lbs boost.. Will I lose much HP with the XR drive? top/bottom performance?

That I don't know. You might check with Havasuhangin, I think he moderates in the Hot Boats forum. If he's there he could fix it for you. By the way welcome to the boards, didn't mean too come off as an ass!! wink

What did you break on the XZ? Friend of mine has an XZ on his 25 Daytona, 900 hp. Got almost 2 years on it so far. I was debating on going to the XZ instead of the XR. Broke my standard Bravo after 36 hours frown

I installed a Whipple system at the end of last season to my HP500EFI. I changed my XZ to XR at the same time, it was the biggest reccomendation given. I cant see where you would loose any hp with the gear change. Everyone I talk to says the biggest key to keeping the gears alive is "Easy on, easy off" the throttle. Even tho GT Performance is out of your area (Montclair, CA) Gary is by far the most highly regarded in the industry, call him.
Good Luck, NB

I cant see where going from xz gears to XR gears in the same drive would make you loose anything. Almost the same surface, friction....I dont see it, but who am I to say?!

That spec was from Mercury when the XR was launched...I'm not a gear expert...maybe Dave could explain the difference between straight and helical-cut gears.
Or maybe it's the way the straight cut gears are submerged...
It was easier to see when Merc was offering a whole package...the propshaft HP was 25 less on the same engine with a XR drive vs the XZ. Now, they mix them all up...
Either way, who am I to say?
