DSL is ok, uses your phone lines of course. We have more issues with DSL speeds than I like. Cost is high on DSL, we get a break as long as we keep our home phone.
Once cable modems are available here, we drop both DSL and home phone. We have enough cell phones here, so who needs a standard phone line.

Cable still uses phone company to get into the internet, we just don't need subscriber lines.

I have Qwest DSL at home. If I download a video or something from here, it downloads at about 100k/sec. Here at work we're on an old T1 and I see about 140k/sec. What do you see with a cable modem?

My cable modem is much faster than T-1 line. Less than the maximum of the system but well over 2mbps. Just like a LAN it varies based on the amount of users on the system.

If the cable company monitors the system, should not matter how many people are hooked up:)
Unfortunately, not enough of them keep up with growth and they have periods where they out grow the network. That is when it slows down.

Cable modem is like a power circuit in series/parallel. The more loads(users), the more bandwith is consumed. So basicly, if your at the end of the line, it matters not. You should receive the same bandwith as the other users, but all loads will slow down equally.

Depends on the cable system and their architect. Some systems will guarantee a speed or sell different package speeds. Could go on, but that would bore you.:D keep it simple, competition will make each of them improve their networks to keep up with demand or we go somewhere else

I have time warner
And when the computer geeks come over they are amazed at how fast it is.
They then check all the speed and stuff and flip out

T-3 = 145 Megabits per second
Cable Modem = 100 Megabits per second, but you share with anyone connected to your network ring.
Usually you get 2 to 3 mbps, sometimes more like DSL speed at 800 Kbps or so. I have never seen mine below this speed though.

Most simply put,
Internet = phone system
The phone system includes all of the cross country fiber optic lines, copper and to a much lesser extent microwave radio transmission.
it is AT&T, SBC, Sprint, MCI, et al, and a host of independents all networked together..ahhhhaaa, Internet....!
It is the "Last Mile" connection that makes home phone competition and internet provision so expensive.
Cable companies utilize their coaxial cable in the ground just like a large Local Area Network in an office. The signal is modulated at about 1ghz frequency on the cable, it is 100mb ethernet. They are connected back into the gigantic network pipes in the ground from the cable head end to the local point of presence.
Cable network boxes in your neighborhood house the equipment that handles the electronic duties of the local network.

Actually a T3 is 45 and an OC-3 is about 145Mb.
Most cable services starts at 1.5 Mb. I have DSL at 1.5/128, been good so far had it about 3 years.
Unless things have changed the cable runs in series as stated and everyone shares the bandwidth on that run. DSL is on a switched network to the house.
Both are good as long as I never need to go back to a dial up I am a happy man.

Geeeze you right. I don't know where that number came from must be that friggin old age again. 1 DS-3 or T-3 =28 T-1s at 1.544 mb/s. We used to use 3 DS 3 digital microwave radios which totalled 135mb. OC-3 is 155mb/s. Gotta sweep out those cobwebs...

We ran both the cable and DSL at the same time to test the difference. We purchased the 768k cable svc which was comparable priced to the ADSL. Cable fluctuated from 500k-700k and the ADSL stayed consistent at 1.5mb. almost a T1 speed:D Guess ya know which we kept....ADSL ;)
Now then, wanna throw around some more numbers and acronyms?  :D LOL....J/K. I'll keep it simple;)
My dialup server, that's a whole new issue for another time:cool:

Does anyone know how some dial ups are getting faster speeds that 56k, I think it is like double or something., but still only using dial up.Are they multiplexing some way or what?

It's not a true dialup. FCC regulates dialup speeds at 53.3k. There are a few software programs that say that they speed it up but I've never used them. I can even make a dialup "Look" like it's getting 115k but in reality, it's not. Years ago I also tried using 2 modems on 2 phone lines but I don't remember how that worked. AN ISDN line is B channels but you would need a ISDN router/modem to make it work.
