View Full Version : Do I need a 4X4

Kilrtoy

We are thinking about buying an 03 F250 or 350 tommorrow.
Do I need a 4X4. Its a 3500 Bump over 4X2. We just use this truck to drive the boat to and from the river , lake.
The wife wants a 4X4. Her reasoning is because the tires slipp sometimes. Well I explained thats because its a F150.
Need feed back....

I like em. Right now I have an 01 F250 4x4 with the 7.3 diesel. I don't use it that much, but, it's nice to have the capability to pull a steep wet/muddy launch ramp without any drama. Cost all the way around is higher (fuel, insurance etc) but it was always worth it to me. Tows nice too

I bought a 2004 F-350 Dually a couple months ago. Nice to have the 4X4 when needed. Every now and then we even get snow up here.
My insurance difference was only $80 a year, so it was worth it.

02 F350 CC PSD 4x4 here.....
Yup 4x4 is a good thing to have on the ramp occasionally. I can only think of one time in 10 years when I needed it though and it was nearly (no it was) an off road and very steep ramp. Up here where I live we need a 4x4 just to get home or move the horse trailer up the drive sometimes so it is pretty much necessary to have it.
If I were living in an area with no snow then my honest choice would be a 2x4 DRW. DRW for more payload and better handling when towing anything and 2x4 for better milage and lower initial cost. I have SRW now cause DRW's get stuck in the snow and mud too easy.
OH, and get a diesel.... I'll never go back to a gasser ever again as long as I live.

That was taken off the 58, on the test drive out of Mojave. Which vehicle are you thinking about?

My dad always thought it was stupid to buy a 4x4, which is all I have ever owned. He has needed me a few times to pull him out of a few predicaments he has gotten himself in to. I was away for about 6 months a few years back and I told him to drive my truck so it wouldn't be sitting around. When I came back I was ready to trade for another new one and he asked if he could buy my truck. Now he won't drive anything else. I have been running the diesels since 94 but just bought a new Dodge 2500 regular cab 4x4 with the hemi, and I really like the way it runs...

I would recommend a 4X4. At the prices of today's vehicles, the extra cost is not that much. I bought mine on the theory that I'd rather have it even if I don't use it very often, than spend all that money for a new vehicle and realize later I should have gotton the 4X4 option. Just my $.02.:)

In my opinion, you don't need 4WD to launch your boat. But if I was buying that pickup, I'd sure get the 4WD. But, it's your money, not mine. Good luck with whatever you get. Either way you'll have a nice pickup.

I have an 03 F-250 with the diesel and I love having 4x4. I have used it a bunch of times. Either on a slick ramp or even more out in the sand. I head to Dumont and Glamis freequently and out there it is a must have. There is nothing that I havent been able to get out of where most 2wd trucks need to get towed out. If you buy the diesel I get about 18mpg around town and 22 on the Hwy. Usually when towing my boat I get around 15-16 depending on how fast I tow. I will never own another truck that is gas or is not a 4x4. Only way to go!

Three blocks to the ramp where I live!
Laugh if you will! Bought this for 5 bucks and it does the job DANDY for me.
I just leave it hooked up. Plus the three on the tree KICKS ASS! I feel like Uncle Jesse!
Even got a sixer of "Uncle Jessies WHUPASS" in the deal!

Thought ya might get a giggle outta dis!
If I gotta go more I use my 1/2 ton chevy (2wd). I've spun some tire but then again I wouldn't think of launching on a sand ramp or somthin. Got a good one three blocks away. What the Hell?

I bought a 2WD that looks like a 4WD!
In all sincerety though, I have had nothing but 4x4's for the last several years, and never clicked it on once. I figured if I didn't need it then, I don't need it now.
Somebody told me once that if you have a 2WD, you will get stuck as soon as you turn off into a muddy field. If you have 4WD, you will get stuck WAY out in the muddy field!

I would say go for the 4x4 too. We have a 4x4x Suburban and enjoy taking it up to Mammoth for ski trips. It pleases me no end to pass by those suckers laying on their backs in the cold dirty ice while they put on their chains. :D :D :D
It helps for camping and baja trips too. My current pickup is not 4x, but my next one will be.

You give the truck to the dealer and the girl to me. I assume you're getting rid of both or are you just being misleading?
Why the f$CK you going to get another FORD? Get a dodge Kiltroy! Dodge 2500 with cummins diesel.
If it's not a dodge its not worth buying.

My buddy has a 3500 diesel DODGE, Is that right , dually crew cab, awesome, you can feel the power, but the ride almost jolted my teeth out of my head......
After being in that truck for a 10 minute ride I had the worst headache........ No thanks,

Oh yeah i almost forgot. 4x4 will let you launch amd load with bald tires.
I got good tires now though so i may not need the 4x4 for that but uhhhhh.... u ever go anywhere with snow and youll be wantin that 4 wheel drive. Pretty incredible what a difference those extra 2 wheels make in the snow.

Kilrtoy,
What year is your Ford? and how many miles? I'm trying to figure out how long these triton motors will last.
I have a 98 F150 Ext Long Bed that I bought brand new and it now has 100K miles on it. I've yet to have a problem and have always run synthetic in it, but I'm getting nervous about the miles. Each morning on my way to work I pass Valley Park Ford on Topanga Cyn and those new trucks are calling my name :D I also pass Rydel and they have some really nice (much higher HP) Chevy trucks to tempt me!!
As for 4 x 4...... Somebody else will always have one if I really need it :D For me it's about comfort and 2 x 4's are much nicer.

its a great truck real head turner, but as far as towing, JUST MY OPINION it sucks, I know im in the minority. but my Exped towed way better and got better gas milage. I get about 12 around town and 7 when towing......

Jerry, I had 145,000 miles on my old 2000 F-150 4X4. I used to commute 160 miles round trip to work, so the miles are mostly freeway. The truck is still going strong with the new driver. Never has as much as an oil leak, pulled the boat fine.
Personally I thing you are due for a bigger truck and should drop the dime:D

You said you liked your Expedition and you also want the best ride so your choices are:
1. Chevy Suburban/GMC Yukon XL
2. Chevy Tahoe/GMC Yukon
3. Chevy Avalanche
4. Hummer H2
Don't get a pickup truck - they ride like crap compared to the four listed above (and even your Expedition)
Forget Ford - waste of time and money :D If you must then get an Expedition or an Excretion ooops Excursion

Kilrtoy,
I have a Supercrew like yours and I love the way it pulls my boat but I have never towed with an Expedition. Do they really tow that much better? My Dad has 2003 F250 crew cab 2 wheel drive V10 and he tows his 26ft. Sleek Craft and has had no problems launching his boat. I do like the looks of the 4 x 4 better though. Not sure if it's worth the extra $$$ for it though if your not going to hardly ever use it.

Kilrtoy,
What makes the ride harsh in that truck is the fact that it is a 1-ton 4x4 with a sold front axle. If you buy a 1-ton or 3/4 ton Ford Superduty you will get the same harsh ride. The only 1-ton with independent front suspension is the GM. And it still rides way harsher than any new 1/2-ton ie F-150. Those trucks (3/4 & 1-ton) are made to pull big-ass trailers and carry heavy payloads. If you are looking for comfy-cushy ride forget the 3/4 and up. Why not just get a 1/2 ton 4x4? Cushy ride, better re-sale than a 4x2, no problems at the ramp, go skiing/boarding whenever without putting on chains.
That would be my pick if I were you.
