What should I read on the gauge? I say 123. Anyone? `74 Nova 250 motor.

My guess is that it depends.
It does, doesn't it. Seems like if the cam were advanced or retarded you would see different readings?

I`m talking a straight up stock motor. Advertised compression is what is listed.

A 9:1 motor should be 150-160psi.....so I guess 8.25:1 (not worn out)130-140psi...

130-135 I`d roll with on 8.5:1.

sounds like you already know what you're talkin bout then:rolleyes:

Wouldn't the cam specs also have something to do with dynamic compression you're reading on a warm engine being turned over?
With that being asked guessing the static compression ratio on a motor based off dynamic compression wouldn't be very accurate, specially when most engines have different valvetrain timing events.
The dynamic compression ratio would vary on RPM and VE of the engine being tested, anywhere from 3.0-8.5:1 would be something I would guess on your indicated motor.
So what's the catch Hoss? I think BrendellaJet and I are on to something here, no?...
:D

NO! LMAO
This is a simple question. No tricks. You 2 guys are reading wwwwwaaaaaayyyyyy too deep. But funny as hell.:D
Straight up question. ;)

Ok...LMAO...
My educated guess is based on these reasons...
1. Why else would HOSS be in the gearhead section trying to stump somebody unless it was a way out in "left field"?
2. An inline 6 that barely makes a 100HP and since compression makes HP...well we know where this is going...
3. What in the hell is HOSS doing wasteing valuable "Sandbar" time over here in the gearheads section over a inline 6 motor?
My verdict...
Somewhere around 70psi

I`ve been weining myuself from the sandbar. I want to get back to my roots. Gearheads, Jets, Bench Racers.
70 psi? No way. The motor won`t run under 108-110.

Well when ya get done hearding the sheep up there, stop on by and get yourself a cold-one in the gearheads section and while you're hear answer the freaking trivia question you asked us. We're in suspense:p

I think you ought to take that question to the Bench.
