It's a one piece. I have never done a one-piece while it's in the truck but I would think a case of beer, a cherry picker, and a slew of bench racers might be a better weekend then trying to change it under the truck.
Just my 0.02
On a difficulty level meter, 1 being easy 10 being farm it out...I would say it's an 8 . But I'm sure someone around here might beat me with a 6 or 7.:D

1 peice rear main seal, Just pull the tranny and have at it.

One of my friends just got geared up to R+R the rear main on his 97 Chevy. He got under there and after CLOSE inspection he found it was just the pan gasket...much easier.
Maybe you'll get lucky to??

Also seen the back of the intake manifold leak (or the older oil sending units) do a nice job of looking like a rear main seal leak. :D

the other thing to check. is if it has a oil cooler the o-ring on the adapter above the oil filter gets hard and leaks down the bellhousing cover and makes it look like a rearmain seal leak.

It is leaking thru the bell housing so I figure it is the rear main or the rear pan
won't know till I really get under to see
thanks guys

Dont drop the tranny! If you want to save a lot of time pull the driveline & get some 8 or 9" bolts & slide the tranny back. get in there with some air & pull the flywheel. then you'll be ready to work. If you do it this way you can do it on the ground in about three or four hours & not have to worry about making too big of a mess. You wont need to pull the converter either.
