Are Volvo Penta drives any good and how much power can they take????? Don't go there, parts are a pain in the ass to get... anywhere! Do youself a favor, get a Merc.

Three Volvo outdrives in family over last 30 years. No problems with any. Parts and service were easy to get in Havasu, Vegas, etc. First was a model 270 in 1974. Second a model 280 in 1983, and last an GSX model in 1998. Never had a high performance engine powering any of these boats...300HP max. It is my understanding that they aren't really a high performance drive, but for stock small-block installations, are a bit stronger than a Merc Alpha 1. wink

those drives are a very good , i my self being a service tech, have found those drives to be almost bullet proof, as far as horsepower,they will take up to around 500hp, thats the single prop jobs, the duel props will hold uo to alittle more hp,, hope that helps!
