I am looking at purchasing a 1986 911 targa. It has approx 75k miles. Looks great. Have not driven it yet. I have never owned a porsche before. I am wondering if I am geting in over my head with $$$ for upkeep. Any suggestions/opinions about this type of car would help.

I owned one just like the one you are thinking about. The maintenance is pretty simple. I would take the car into a shop and have them go over the entire car. Spend the 200 dollars and find out the condition before you buy. The car will go over 150K miles with no problems when taken care of. I like the hard tops better because they are real tight and also hold the value a little better.

I have owned a pair of Targa's...
The mid 80's 911's are like money in the bank...
Bulletproof motor/tranny combo, minimal maintenance, they will go 175k miles easily when properly maintained.
Chain tensioners are critical to longetivity...have a reputable mechanic check it out.
80's 911's have excellent resale value as well due to they're reputation as solid automobiles.
...an all around great fun car for the money.

and thats where you should keep it ,cause a simple rebuild is only 12k... and if you have a 930 you can add another 6 to that:D

You also need to learn to drive it.
A 911 is a very finicky beast to drive fast. If you lift mid corner, you are going for a ride. If you get on the gas to early you are going for a ride. If you get on the gas to late, you are going for a ride.....
And they are way to underpowered for my taste.
These Guys Can fix that though!!! (http://www.renegadehybrids.com)

DON'T LET ANYONE SCARE YOU AWAY FROM THE CAR IF YOU LIKE IT. 2 YEARS AGO I PURSHASED A 87 928 S4 HAVING OWNED AMERICAN CARS. IT IS EASY TO MAINTAIN, AND THE GIRLS JUST LOVE IT. THE ONLY BAD THING IS THE PRICE OF PARTS. TRY TO FIND SOMEONE WHO SELL FACTORY PART INDEPENDENTLY. GOOD LUCK
