Riverbound::: How does it sound, the 4 subs up front? Should I go this route or try to put them @ rear?
Looks good there in the bow!

They are four 10" subs in sealed enclosures. They are powered by a 1200 watt subwoofer amp.
To be honest its too much bass for four 6X9's and two 6.5" seperates (those are getting about 100 watts each for a total of just shy of 600). I have the gains on the sub amp turned down pretty low.

that particular boat is one of the hardest hitting boats I have built. It has won numerous stereo contests, including this years eliminator regatta for best stereo. If you go to havasu you will see it out on the water almost every weekend. It is a blue 25 eagle with a big al&eds autosound sticker on the side.

Hey Riverbound, I've seen only one other boat with 4 6x9's above the dash. Are those custom built enclosures,or store bought? I wanted to do something like the back to back 6x9's and use some perko light bases and masts for the speaker connection. Anyone have pics or suggestions on how to fab this up so it doesn't look HOKEY?

River, I am running four 12" Alumapro marine subs. They are scheduled to debut the beginning portion of next year. The components that I am using are the Alumapro Alchemy 6.5" components. I have 6 pairs of the 6.5's. I have one Zapco 4k watt amp with 1k per channel to the subs and two Zapco 1k watt amps powering the speakers. I am also running a Phatnoize 50 farad cap with a Kenwood head unit. I love how clear the sound is and I can play everything from Hiphop to Country and it sounds crystal clear. The nice thing is that we were building the system while building the boat so the subs have built in boxes into the boat that were glassed in and are the perfect air space for the subs. The proper boxing makes a world of difference. The only problem that I have is that it drains the batteries extremely fast. If I am cranking I will drain all four Optima blue tops in approx. 30 minutes.

Thats a sweet setup Mbrown. How is the generator wired into the system? It is not connected to a battery charger is it or is it direct power for the amps and not run through the batteries? I definitely have to do that on the next boat!

BB572,
The generator is wired to the Xantrex charger and the charger is connected to the batteries...The built-in charger on the generator is no match for the Xantrex, so I just wanted 110 for the Xantrex..
It works great...but let me know when you are ready to build, I have other ideas, and their are more ways to skin a cat..

Hey MB what does something like that generator and Xantrex system cost? Is it hard to install after the boat is built? I haven't put the system in the new ride yet and I'm getting ideas right now.

The generator runs anywhere from 930 - 1000 at online sites, and the Xantrex I think is around 400 at West Marine...The optional Xantrex gauge is about 40-50 at West Marine.....This type of setup can be done after the boat is built since it does not require a lot of running wires to the helm or forward section...the only wire to run to the helm would be the monitor for the xantrex charger....The Generator and Charger would be installed near your battery banks....Not sure what someone would charge you to install, since we packaged ours into the build of the boat..

Awesome system and install MBrown. Very very nice!
Regarding the Xantrex, I am aware of the multi stage charging capabilities of the unit and that to me is a really important factor in maintaining battery life and giving a battery a full charge. A regular charger cannot compete with a multi stage charger.
How many amps does the Xantrex hit the battery with? Is that charger designed to be able to supply its rated amp charge over a long period of time without overheating? (i.e. providing charger current even while running the stereo full tilt). How many volts does the charger give? The reason I ask is most amps are engineered to take up to a 14.4V to about a 15.5V maximum. (did you go the Generator/Xantrex route because the alternators in outboards are somewhat limited in output?)
I assume the Xantrex cannot supply more than its rated Amp charge rating so you will still be draining the batteries to some degree if your really pushing the stereo. Do you charge one bank of batteries while running the stereo off another bank and then switch them as appropriate?
One last Q. Where do you route the exhaust of the generator?
Thanks for the help!

mbrown2

Thnx for the comments...I will try to answer your questions:
How many amps does the Xantrex hit the battery with?
Output current: 40 A @ 14.5 V nominal
Is that charger designed to be able to supply its rated amp charge over a long period of time without overheating?
It is supposed to, but I had a problem with mine and it is getting replaced/fixed right now...When working...it was charging at 14.4V and keeping the batteries at that level.
How many volts does the charger give? The reason I ask is most amps are engineered to take up to a 14.4V to about a 15.5V maximum. (did you go the Generator/Xantrex route because the alternators in outboards are somewhat limited in output?)
Output voltage (nominal, depending on settings)
• Charge: 13.8-14.8 VDC
• Float: 13.1-14.2 VDC
• Equalize: 15.5 VDC @ 5 A maximum
(those are the three stages above)
Actually the alternators on the 300x's put out 65amps, so I am not concerned that they could charge over long distances, but when you are running 80 from one end of the lake/river to the other...they don't get much charge time...the real reason for the setup was so I could crank the stereo for hours and if the batteries drained, I would just fire up the generator...it is not too often, I run the generator and sound system together...it would have to be a long day at the sandbar to do so.....Also, I use it for shore power...we leave the boat docked all night, so at the end of the day, I fire up the generator and in the morning, I have fully charged batteries...I don't have power down by the docks, so this comes in handy...
Do you charge one bank of batteries while running the stereo off another bank and then switch them as appropriate?
No...there is only two batteries and each is wired to each engine through two perko's...the Xantrex is wired to both batteries....I run off both batteries all the time...if they go dead, I kick on the charger get where I need to go, and fully charge them at the end of the day...has not happened yet...since with Odyssey's they last...when my Xantrex went out, I could not tell it was not charging so I did have an issue when one Odyssey went dead because I though the Charger was charging...
Where do you route the exhaust of the generator? Ok, I know no one wants to hear how trick DCB is with their rigging and shit, but to answer the question it is required:D ...Really, this is the first one they had done....and Dave was a little worried about doing it...Deron and Chad down there did some research and found some heat tubing that could withstand the temps, and encased that in the braided line, and they routed it to an extra bilge dump...so from the outside it looks like I have an extra bilge pump....and they fabricated the exhaust to hook to the hose and braided line....It is just trick:D
Hope that helps....let me know if you have any questions..

That is an awesome setup....
I had no idea those outboards had alternators with that kind of output. Nice! Especially since you have two of them. Sounds like between the alternators, generator, charger, and your batteries that you have more than enough juice and means of recharging.
I wasnt sure if that braided line in the pics was a gas supply line or exhaust. TRICK for sure!
Someday, I need to splash your design! :D

Go ahead and splash...the basis for the idea came from others I have conversed with, and DCB dialed it in for me, so I got no patent on it...plus it will only help to raise the bar for future installs..
The OB's did not always have the alternators...up until about 3 years ago, the 2.5's had 16amp alternators....Now the 2.5's have 65...there are aftermarket alternator kits for those Hi-Po 2.5's now...
The only thing we did not rig was the gas line...in talking to Honda, it appeared they were recommending 87-89 octane....and I needed to run 91-92 in the boat...so we did not rig the gas tanks to run off the boat gas tanks....it is just as easy to fill up..

Stereo was originally built in 1996 was repaired after being stolen in late 1998, same speakers from 1998. Needs new grill covering and sub bezel (damaged during theft).
