Has anyone heard anything good or bad involving a procharger or whipple on the scorpion 377 motor?
I am not yet sold on the 496 set up. I hear it has problems.
thanks

I don’t know anyone who has put it on a scorpion.. But that is a lot of boat.. don’t forget about torque.. How fast do you want to go? Is it worth breaking a warranty and is the cost difference worth it? How much is an HP500 and Scorpion with a whipple?

If I had half of your money Doghouse, I would burn mine. If only I had 100K lying around, you would be boatless! Seriously

You have half of my money? So, that's where it all went! And I thought it all went into that stupid boat, or so my wife says. Come to think of it, she's probably right. Hate it when that happens. Actually, if you did have half of my money, you wouldn't have much! :D
Whipped Scorpion would probably run pretty nice in that boat, better than a 496HO, similar or maybe slightly better than an HP500. But, you would be done as far as simple hp upgrades go. Assuming the price difference between that and the HP500 is small, I'd probably start with the bigger motor and have room to grow in the future if "necessary". Ah, who am I kidding, I'd never pay the $$$ for the factory hi-perf stuff. I'd call Larry and have him build up a nice HP500 killer! Or, maybe put together a custom package based on the zz502 crate motor.

yea.. what he said.. sounds better:D

Larry who? And how much are we talking.
I just cant see spending over 20K for an HP500. Id rather drop less and get a 509 or a 540. How much are we talking for something big but naturally aspirated. A buddy of mine runs a GT 540 and its killer.

Larry Peto of Larry's Engine & Marine in Tucson. You may have heard of his handiwork in a little slug called "Predator", or maybe a certain blue & white DCB belonging to Mr. Big. ;)
520-623-5373. Like I always say, everyone has their favorite builder, and most of them do great work. Larry just happens to be someone that I consider extremely good, as well as fair and helpful even to people who aren't spending a bazillion dollars in his shop. I believe the motors that Charley has are Larry's standard 580ci low compression package, something like 675hp/700ft-lbs, completely ready to drop in with IMCO exhaust, wiring harness, water pump, power steering, oil coolers, bellhousing, coupler, mounts, etc, for about $21k. Don't quote me on the price, I could be off somewhat. Basically he will build whatever you want and I think you'd find the prices very competitive compared to some of the other big name shops.
Man, I think I'm turning into a cheerleader! :D

GT 540 .. :D ... Its local. And reliable.... but for not much more.. you can get a GT 582 my buddy is getting two of them for less then 38k

Is there pricing online anywhere? Or do I have to call and get quotes.
I am not looking for anything radical just 500+ HP for a reasonable price. Reliable too.

Hey THOR,
Did you find out the price difference between the 377 and 496HO? What top speeds are they telling you?
You may want to PM NashvilleBound he has a 24/7 with a built up HP500EFI that runs 90 mph. It sounds like he likes it but recommeded a GT motor also. My 2 cents.......

To echo ...don't forget torque. The small blocks are not going to produce the torque of a big block. Horsepower is a function of torque and RPM the greater the torque at a given RPM the greater the horsepower at that RPM. Moving a big boat will always be quicker with a higher torque motor. If it takes 10,000 RPM (Indy motors) to build 1,000 HP you will have a very sluggish boat. May be great when it gets up to speed but will probably be a real dog getting on plane.
Just my $0.02 for what it is worth.

Thor, forgot to mention, you don't need 100. 90 or 95 would do the trick! ;)

so what does the trick then?

502 has a good point. I'm running the 377 and can get 75mph (no GPS) in perfect conditions, labbed prop and trimmed up. Buuuut, it is a dog out of the hole. Doesn't bother us since we like to board and the slow speed makes for more wake. It will be a problem if you like to ski. Its a bitch to get up on a single! I've been told I can change props and get more out of the hole, less top end, however I neeeeeed the speed.:D

I'm not really trying to sell the boat, but if someone wanted it bad enough... ;)
My last insurance flail has convinced me that my days of cat ownership are numbered. I'm ok with paying a grand a year, but three or four, forget it. It's just not worth it to me. If I get dropped again then it will be time to consider a V hull. I've always liked the Cheetah 29, maybe something like that would do. Bob tells me that the all white one with the nasty blower motor in it has run 108 on gps. Not bad for a big slug boat! Besides, it would also be nice to have a little less money tied up in a toy. The Cheeter is a pretty good value.

The Scorpion with the sc will make over 600lbs of torque and slightly over 500hp. Remember it's stroked and with the screw compressor, it makes a bunch of torque, more than the 496 (not SC'd). If you want more, then you can put the Edelbrock aluminum heads, forged low compression pistons, bigger cam, big Olson pan, strap the mains and 650hp is very easily achievable.
Thanks,
Dustin

Sooooo! Whats it gonna be THOR?:D :D :D

THOR

More than likely the 496 HO. From the engineering specs, the motor will handle a SC with the right pulley and boost without having problems. I am still over 1 year away from installing one if I buy a boat at the boat show.
