My dvd player plays dvd,cd,cdr,cdrw,mp3's,mpegs,svcd. the file is that I am trying to burn is called "windows media audio/video file". How do I convert this video?

You need a converter program. Go HERE TO DOWNLOAD (http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=video+converter&tg=dl-2001) a converter program to convert to the type of file that you want. I believe the extension for Windows Media Audio/Video File is WM so you will need to convert from WM to a format that is readable with your player.

Like BBT said you will need a tool to convert the video to a .mpg in order to view it on a DVD player. It can be either a VCD format mpeg1 or an SVCD format mpeg2. SVCD is better quality but also double the file size. Depending on the quality of the input it may not look any better. Unfortunately most of the converters only support converting from .avi to .mpg. If you have a windows media file, .wmv, it can be difficult to find something that will convert it.
One converter that I've found that works is TMPGEnc: http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html If you rename the .wmv file to a .asf, TMPGEnc will allow you to choose it as the input source and can then convert it to .mpg for you.

Can you re-burn it in another format? Is the original video asf?
Also, did you see this? (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/archive/t182743.html)

Windows media can be encoded with security to prevent copying, if that is the case I don't know of anyway to directly convert it. If you have a TV out on your video card another option is to hook that up to a VCR and play the video full screen on your computer and record the output.

as Daytona said, most are encoded....if you can find the right program, that can be bypassed (do a search for security codes for the player first and work you way backwards). Most of the codes are easy to break (ie: a common 7 numerical factor such as 4352071643). If you can't get it by next week, PM me and I'll try to convert if for you (just sick as a dog right now and can barely keep it together here at work)

I think this is the right one this time, I was able to covert is using TMPGEnc after renaming it to a .asf, right click and save to your hard drive. I have reencoded both as a VCD compliant mpeg1 and an SVCD compliant mpeg2. Right click on these links, save them to your hard drive, burn them to a CD and hopefully you will be able to view at least one of them on your DVD player:
mpeg1:
www.carlsonspeed.com/~daytona/58461Tiev_Heel_Toe_footwork.mpg
mpeg2:
www.carlsonspeed.com/~daytona/58461Tiev_Heel_Toe_footwork_svcd.mpg
Edit: I just noticed when trying out the links that my computer wants to save them with an extension of .mpeg instead of .mpg. If that happens to you, just rename them to .mpg after you've downloaded them. I've had some DVD players not recognize the .mpeg extension. Btw, what make and model DVD do you have?
