I left for Great Lakes RTC back on Dec. 14th 1982. Coming from SoCal, that was quite an eye opener!! It was freakin COLD and ICY.
That was quite an experience, I still remember most of the people I met there and have good memories of that time of my life even though some of it was rough.
Went on to Dam Neck Va. for Operations Specialist 'A' school, and then to San Diego for NTDS 'C' school.
Joined the fleet on the DD973 USS John Young.
I'm sure your Son will do ok. It's really all about attitude!
Good luck, keep us posted!

I was at NTC Great Lakes from July through December 1985. What a pit! I agree, it is all about attitude.

Well I joined the Navy in Chicago a couple of years back.
I told them I wanted to go to Orlando for basic or I was not signing the papers.
Weather was much better in Florida. :D

Congrats on your sons departure! You'll be shocked the next
time that you see him. As some of you know, Nancy's son TJ
went into the Air Force a while ago and now flies in and out of
Baghdad on a C130 on a regular basis. Here's a kid that lived
on Taco Bell, Blockbuster Video and the couch, a year later he
comes home to visit and he's up every day at 5, irons his own
clothes, talks to everyone in a positive adult manner, looks great, cares about others and was a pleasure to be around. I'm proud
as they get! And good luck to your son!

COngrats to you and your son. Your boy will come home a responsible young man. I too am an alumnist of Great Mistakes (joke), your son will get it. I went in October 20, 1991 and was there until April 24 1992. I did Bootcamp and Hospital Corp School there. The best time of year there. Oh the memories.....Standing in attention on the grinder at 5:45 for one hour in -35 degree weather..........getting screamed at for not being able to do a push up in 3 ft of snow (my hands would go through the snow and just barely hit the ground).........getting the call over the 1 MC telling us we had to wear our full locker because of the temperature outside. My nick name was California surf punk. Do not ever go to bootcamp with a tan. Make sure on his grad weekend he goes and checks out Chicago while he is there, are you going??? This will be a grownig experience for your son. And no matter where he gets stationed, make sure he makes the most of it. I was told that I would be back in San Diego and ended up in Pensacola, FLorida. I was so bummed until I got there. That ended up being a 2+year party. Pensacola Beach is the shit. Anyways, he will be fine. The best advice you can give him is to just remind him that bootcamp is just a game...The sooner he learns to play, the better. Oh yeah, when he gets the option to go to Church on SUnday, tell him to go. Religous stuff aside, it is a nice break from the crap, and there are alot of girls to look at.:D Once again, congrats to you and your son. This experience will change him for ever (for the better).:)

My experience in the ARMY was really life changing. Like others have said, he will come back a better person. For me it put things in perspective.

The 2 minute call!! Oh my gosh, I know exactly where he is making it from. He also had his urine test then, and this morning, he more then likely woke up to trash cans being knocked over and people being spilled out of their bunks. Welcome to Bootcamp! Right around this time, he is wondering to himself "what have I gotten myself into....I had it so much better at home, I should have went to college". IMO every young man should go through bootcamp. Send lots of care packages to him and make enough for 60 people, because he will have to share any food with others. Oh, the memories;) :)

If you can go to his graduation..... I guarentee that it will be your proudest day.....
Reading all the different stuff is funny.... I remember the day I left to bootcamp......Aug 21 1971...... Buss ride from LA to San Diego....But I don't remember that phone call..... 6 weeks before our first call ........ I do remember letters and Packages..... He who got the most was "THE MAN".....
Ask him about Galley 517 ....... Also getting his ball cap that says NAVY.....
Believe me, he will be treated well..... If he complains about the food, don't believe him ...... No salt peter in todays chow.... HAHAHA

When you said urine test it remindes me of the navys(new?) zero tolerance of drug use,as from the time he signed up and his arrival to boot camp he has had at least 3 and maybe 4 urine test.
I guess they dont mess around! We will be able to send letters but no care packages of any kind.We now have two other family members who recently signed for the navy as well . They will ship in june and in july! WHAT A GREAT BUNCH OF KID'S!
GO GET'EM JOHN H. TERRI G. AND MIKE Mc.

The Navy has a few 0 tollerance policies. 0 drugs, 0 sexual harrasment is a big one also (courtesy of the Tail Hook Association). I did 3 drug tests, 1 at Meps, one at the arrival at bootcamp, one during and periodically for the rest of my time in. Nothing quite like having to whip it out and pee in front of another guy. We had one guy who could not pee for 5 hours. He must have downed about 2 gallons of water, we turned on faucets, flushed toilets, our company commander even brought in a radio and played music for the guy, all for a sample of urine:D

When were you there? I was there back in mid 1983. Met alot of cool people and hung out at Virginia Beach quite a bit (par....tay city).
Did you see that story in the news recently where a guy got killed while climbing from one balcony to another at one of the Virginia beach hotels? That brought back a lot of memories. :)
I bought my first real camera over at NAS Oceana and still have a lot of pics from around the area.
