View Full Version : Rear mount alternator

On some jet boat somewhere, I saw a rear mount alternator. Anyone got an idea of how to put a pulley on the PTO adapter. A bolt on would be the best, but I can machine something if necessary. I already have a nice alternator bracket on the front of the engine which will bolt on the back of the engine. Probably going to use a mercruiser take off alt that I have access to since it is smaller than my Motorola marine alt that I am running now. Boat is a Southwind TD so space is at a premium.

That may or may not have been me. I machined the pulley to fit on the rear yoke using a serpentine belt.

you can use a air pump pulley off of a older gm(local junk yard) drill the hole to the outside dia of yoke and weld it or make a flange. i have used these to put alt. on the rear end of race cars. the dia. of pulley is close to 4" so it won't spin the guts out of the alt.

Nice looking boat huh? I'm the lucky bastard that bought BUBBA's boat. the pulley on the jet pump is an aluminum pulley for a BBC that is used on the harmonic balancer. They can be bought at most speed shops or Summit on-line. the bracket was custom made by BUBBA and the adjuster is also a hot rod part found at most suppliers.

Here is a shot of mine. We used a GM smog pump pulley. Can't give a part no., lost it and every other receipt in a fire. Made the mounting brackets. I might have more pics.

Congratulations on that purchase, I have seen Bubbas boat run many times at Blythe. Very nice clean boat. If I had the cash together I would have picked it up. I was hoping he was going to sell less motor, so that I could have thrown a blown motor in it.

Would you be interested in and anodized aluminum bracket and direct drive alternator that runs off of the front of your harmonic balancer? This bracket bolts to the block on a BBC and is anodized blue, comes complete with the splicer coupling that holds on your harmonic balancer, and a rubber cushion that goes between the alternator drive couplings. Let me know I will take 3 bills for the complete set up?? kcraven@diwmsi.com thanks

Here's another pic of Tim's setup.
I've got a jones to do this as well, as it get's all those belts off the front of the block.

No thanks on the direct drive deal, don't think it would fit on a Pontiac with a blower belt.

Thanks Bense, I can't wait to get it wet. I was in the middle of building a new gullwing when I found it. After pushing the numbers I figured it was a better deal. see ya on the water.

So what are you doing with your other gullwing?

Bense, Never had the new hull built. I had bought a CP18 tunnel for the motor and pump. I plan on selling it less motor and pump. Haven't put an add together yet, but if you know of someone that wants a tunnel set up for drag with a 326lb light layup let me know. Here's a picture of the boat when it was complete.

B-jet. I was told that interior was built by Strathom Marine (or something like that) out of Corona. I have seen their interiors in Carrara boats, also out of Corona.

Hey Mr.Twister, I have a custom Hogan sheetmetal blower manifold for a Pontiac as well as a set of super duty round ports, and several other sets of desirable Poncho heads. I also a Vertex magneto and just about any other hard to find hotrod Pontiac part you can think of. If you ever need anything for your Pontiac let me know. I also live in the same town as and am good friends with Quint Stires(the guy who answers tech questions in the Pontiac magazines) and he has a garage full of hard to find stuff.
PS. I would love to see pictures of your motor installed in the boat. I have never seen a Pontiac in a jet, but I will be dropping one in my next project boat.
