things have gotten worse so here's the letter:
Is it a serious matter or one to laugh at? The SVHS Varsity Basketball Program, that is. One player misses a 3 pt shot and is benched for almost 3 periods, another player destroys school property and is benched for 2 periods. WhatÂ’s the reasoning here? WhatÂ’s it teaching the kids? ItÂ’s not that big a deal that you destroy property of an opposing school but you better not miss a 3 pointer? IsnÂ’t destroying school property a much worse offense?
How about 17 year old player driving other players to away games? ShouldnÂ’t there be safety concerns? Never mind those concerns, we need drivers so just look the other way.
DoesnÂ’t SVHS or the Athletic Department have any concerns about these situations? Apparently not, ignorance is not bliss. Lesson learned, keep secrets so reprimands can be avoided.
The players are told they will be rewarded for hard work yet some are cut and others get to sit on the bench with obvious dejection on their faces. ItÂ’s like going to work every day, doing your job only to receive a blank paycheck. What kind of message does this send to the children? Yes, they are still children in the sense their young lives are still being molded.
Oh yea, donÂ’t bother talking about playing time, you donÂ’t want to be heard. Voice your opinion and the whole team will be reprimanded. Ah yes, another good lesson learned, Kids are to seen and not heard, keep your mouth shut or risk having to endure the consequences.
What happened to the days when sports were to not only teach the children about competition but to help build their confidence, self esteem and to learn about working with others? WhatÂ’s going on with the High School Varsity Basketball team is a complete disregard for the betterment of the players in many areas. For what, the desire of one to win at all costs?
From past experience, the parents put out quite a bit of money for their child to play varsity basketball. What about their feelings knowing they put out the same amount as everyone else yet their son gets to sit on the bench most of the time? Talk to the coach and heÂ’ll tell you that your son just doesnÂ’t work hard. Funny how that is the standard answer to all that ask but itÂ’s a faceless excuse. The names and faces may change but the expression is still the same.
The problem with all this isn’t basketball, it has just surfaced from there. Young adults are having their confidence and self esteem destroyed. They are being taught not to voice their opinions and concerns nor can they ask questions about playing time. It’s a sad day when student athletes are taught humility, dejection and failure. I guess it’s a “Win at All Cost” mentality and a “lose at all cost” reality. Won/loss records should be tallied on how the children are being taught and many of the children are losing.
This is a serious matter not only for the players but for the school as a whole.
