be willing to drive for a day trip? I think I could be persuaded to bring the barrels and cook some MotherLodeTri Tip and maybe persuade Hud to cause some Central Calif smoke......

Sorry guys, it kind of came together about 10:00 Sat Nite. It's an extension of our periodic Sunday morning IHOP conferences (which BTW we're willing to travel a little for if someone wants to call one at a location more central for people) I promise we'll do better next time:frown:

Well Traci, only being able to speak for myself (and sometimes having difficulty even with that:p ) For breakfast only I think I would limit my drive to about an hour at the most- definately limiting it to Socal. Now if, say, a location could be found to run the boat and make it a day I'd drive 3+ hrs or so for a day of V-drive bonding after breakfast:D  . Let's let others weigh in here and see who has what to say. Start a new thread if needed,Greg

I used to drive to Tahoe approx 9 hours to ski and drive home. Stupid? 18 hours driving for about 9 skiing. I never claimed to be the sharpest pencil in the box.
Now I limit it to Mammoth, only 5 hours. :D
oh, you were talking about boats.

Yes Mike, I was referring to boats..... as it takes an act of God just to get me to the snow much less drive more than an hour for it - and when I do go, you'll find me in the nearest lodge by the fire drinkin a cold one.
Her454 < -------------------- Cringes at the thought of snow.:D

Well that was the question...not sure where Central would be. Im not too familiar with the boating in that direction. The only thing I have even considered was the River...I think maybe the Kings River? You pass it on the way to Bakersfield on 99 and there is a little beach area and bar and campground. On Friday nights the place is hoppin and on certain weekends I've seen alot of flats anchored out there. Dont know any specifics, or if that would be too far for the So Cal people. Any suggestions?

Iam ok with a day trip, no further north than bako....maybe like 30-40 min north of there but thats it. I heard over the summer that the kings river was really cracking down on noise, and as we all know alot of us don't like to use mufflers, let alone water injection. Maybe someone that has been latley can shed some light on the kings river.

I am vary close to the Kings River area about 20 mi. away i might be able to get the 411 on the noise thing and any other restrictions if any. Real nice place to hang out and nice sandy beaches. I'll get back to you all.

Boatmike,
Thanks Mike - Depending on the details and maybe even the accomodations it could be an overnite thing if they would let us run in that area without any hassle etc. Might still be too far for Sangerboy and his group?

maybe to far for some but not for me for a day, that's about 3 hrs from my place, you'd get a bunch of us showing up. A lot of us are road dogs:D . Boatmike if there are noise and speed restrictions see if they can be lifted for a day for a "special event" and a possible event fee. It's well worth it if it lets us run like we want to:cool: Thanks for checking:cool:

hey Guys,
Sounds like you're thinking about the Kings River. Been there many times. Awesome place, and yes quite a few flatties there. But that isn't the only place in the central valley. From Fresno, I have less than an hour drive to 5 lakes. Just ask if you want more info from the Central Valley.

If I know what county it is and we can settle on a date, let me know and I will call the Sheriff Ofc and see if they can "lift" the restriction for a day. I do that for MotherLode***boats at Lake Hogan for our events (but remember, its not to be called an offical event or there are liability issues) and they usually let me do it if its a non holiday weekend. What is the name of the resort there, I believe it is "Riverland Resort"?
YES, any more info on other lakes would be great, I think we are just trying to get an idea on what options are out there. It would be fun and I think more Nor Cals would be willing to drive it than you'd expect......;)

I have almost got the boat finished and am ready to go for the 150 barrier. I have heard that Lake Ming in Bakersfield on weekends is a great place to gather. I have heard this from lots of the locals that are racers. I am going to need a straight flat lake when this baby launches!

ok Im waiting for a call back from the Tulare County Sheriffs Ofc regarding the muffler/speed issue. She said they had a website but gave me an email address......
This is all I could find on speed ordinances etc and it has a map
http://www.krcd.org/boatmap.html
The river does not open until Memorial Weekend, end of May for actual river use however the restaurant/bar/motel is open year round. The motel and or campsites and or large group area can be reserved and the motel rooms are 79.97 upstairs and 89.95 downstairs as the downstairs face the river and have patios that overlook the river.

We have been going to Kings River for about 35 or 40 years. We use to race there on Saturday nights in the 70's, sometimes over 20 Flats or Hydros lined up on the island ready to run. The river is now patrolled by Fresno and Tulare county Sherriffs. They patrol usually Friday through Monday. They enforce the speed and noise limits. We still spend one or two weeks a year at the motel. I have a Sanger flat (family ski boat) and a Cole TR2. We stay away from the weekends (zoo) and go Sunday afternoon through Friday night. Killer water during the week. The local PWC wakos come out late afternoon during the week and will tear up the water for a couple of hours. We have run my blown TR2 and my brothers blown alcohol boat , both with open zoomies, during the week mid day with picture perfect water and no hassles. There are very few places you can camp 5 feet from the water or open your motel door and walk 100 feet to your boat. It is shallow, water only from Memorial day to mid August, and the water is COLD.

yup, pretty much what Insanity said. I've ran my flat there acouple times on the weekends, but it is much busier (as is everywhere). People ski there all the time, but the river is pretty narrow. The rules are 35 mph, and mufflers required, but they seem to be a little relaxed about the noise. The speed is enforced (but you can tell where the Sheriff is by the sound of his boat).
Water is VERY COLD!
Other spots in Cen Cali -
Bass Lake - Pretty but too crowded
Millerton - Unlimited speed, but the wind can make it choppy (just depends). Excelent camping and launching - no alcohol on shore except camp grounds (big time enforced!)
Shaver - High altitude, 50mph limit - very pretty
Hensley - kind of a fishing lake
Pine Flat - very wide and open - sometimes windy - 50 mph limit
McClure - Nice, usually very flat, don't know about speed limits, not nearly as busy as the others listed.
Don Pedro - never been there
South of Fresno - Lake outside of Visalia, can't remember the name, never been there.
I've met alot of SoCal people @ the Kings River, Pine Flat, and Bass Lake.
Damn, I can't wait for summer!!!

This is sounding real promising:D . The 2 things that need to be in place to draw the most people 1. no speed limit 2. no noise restrictions. The drive would probably need to be 4hrs or under which would exclude Pedro, Melones, McClure, Shaver for the Socal group. Keep the discussion going and add new ideas. The more places and times we can take these boats out and run them, the better:cool:

The lake by Visalia is Lake Kaweah. There is a nice lake for making hard passes right by porterville,45 Mi. north of Bakersfield. Lake Success, Kincade cove is where i have made many hard passes and was flagged down by a Tulare county Sherrifs deputy for what i thought would be for speeding on a hard pass or for too much noise. But no, he said he had me on radar at 103 and gaining but he just wanted to check out my boat and said "Be careful out there" and "Have a nice day." lots of flats at this lake on the west side by the cove. You have to stay in the cove if you want to haul a$$. Lots of ramps and lots of shoreline.

I think that san antonio is too far north in my opinion. I grew up going to lake success. Plus thats not too far out of bako, sould be a little drive for us in so cal....but might be worth it for an overnighter.

This sounds like a real possibility. Definately within my range for a day trip. OK Norcal weigh in. How far would it be for you ?

San Antionio is a possibilty. NO WAY Nacimiento!!!!! They're really assholes there when it comes to "outsiders"(non property owners) and their shitty rules enforcement.... Ming will allow hot boat testing on thursday mornings from 8 till 11 for 30 bucks!! If a bunch of us would show up there on a winter weekend, who knows what we could arrange?? ...Moneypit

Ming is a possibility for the day if that would work, I didnt realize they allowed testing.
Melones and Pedro have been mentioned and Im a bit confused as New Melones is actually above me...and Im 30 minutes ABOVE Lodi.....that does not make sense? Thats pretty far for So Cal.
Im still getting info on the Kings River Deal and it seems we may get to work something out with them for a Friday afternoon deal or possibly during the week. NO way on a big weekend and I dont think it would be worth it anyway.
Anyone else from Nor Cal ? Where is everyone........it would be fun to get a caravan together and head down.:D
I cant wait for summer...................

I taped the Classic V-drive club outings for 3 years. San Antonio was considered the southern meet:rolleyes: .
This lake sucks for a good v-drive outing... zoomies are out of the question, no wake zones, crowded, lousy "dead fish" shoreline, and a 5 and 1/2 hour drive from where a lot of us are in So Cal.
It takes us (Billy B, Bolt Nazi, M and D, Chachi, etc.) 2 hours to hit the grapevine!
I like the sound of the lake just north of bako. Kings river is a long haul for just an afternoon.

If you guys are interested in the lake just north of bako AKA lake Success let me know and i will be happy to take a drive and see what the water level is like and if Kincade cove actually has water. It's only about 30 mi from me. Heck i'll even take a picture.

By the way Jim, Les Schwab has trailer tires made in Mexico that are taco rated. :D

I've been talking to a few people about a SoCal/NoCal dealio possibly in June at Millerton. From all the info on the lakes down in that area that I received, Millerton seemed to be a real good choice for early in the year.

I am going to hit up my pops on some info on Lake Sucess. We havent been in 10+ years, but I will see what he has to say. All I remember was there were no RV hookups and no overnighting, day use only. But there was a KOA like 5 or 10 min from the lake.

well, just a little more info on Millerton if you want, it has some of the best launching - can handle about 15 boats at a time, 4 boats on the ramp next to the camp ground (or 2 boats depending on water level, but should be filling up now). You would have to decide if you want to launch from the Fresno side, or the Madera side which has the camping. Also, camping is excellent with full hookups for RV's. There is also a historic court house there - I think they still give tours. The court house is now on top of a hill there, but was relocated when the lake was built. The town of Friant used to be at the bottom of the lake, then relocated when the Dam was being built. The lake only has a couple coves to hang out in. It is an unlimited speed, but mufflers required (although Ive ran zoomies before). usually flat water, except on the summer weekend afternoons, but thats typical of any lake. Small town nearby, with restruants, gas, etc. Casino also minutes away with really good restruant. Fresno is about 20 minutes away. You can get race full locally at Fresno. The sheriffs at Millerton have always been cool. The sheriffs are all old timers who were around when Sanger, Fresno, & Belmont boats were all making flatbottoms locally.
