Hoss, taking them out is EZ....Any punch combo that will walk them out is fine. BUT, installing them is quite different. There are tools made to install them, although I usually make a brass or alum plug that fits nicely, with a step to drive the shell and a threaded hole in it to attach a piece of all thread, and tap them in. They must line up with the oil holes in the block, and be very square to the cam. I use an old cam to make sure they're straight. After installing the new ones, the cam should turn easily without any hard spots. Beware that SOME motors cam bearings are graduated in size front to rear, Although I'm not sure on your Ford.......Moneypitt

hey Hoss. if you dont have the cam tool, id suggest taking the block to a machine shop and have them do it for ya. here in cali you can rent em at some automotive stores, not sure about your area. too bad your so far, ive got one you could use, but to send it would cost alot more than renting one or having it done. good luck and remember, KEEP THAT ENGINE CLEAN INSIDE !!!

I`ve got one coming tomorrow or Monday from the US Coast Guard machine shop here. I don`t know what size die (Iguess) to use. Sealed Power bearrings: 1414 M Also has F-30 om box. Found the website and deminsions but what dimension to use?
SP 3361DRI 0326728 on bearring. 2nd set of #`s differ on each bearring the last 2 digits: 0326800-0326720-0326720 or 8-0326723-0326806

The machine shop charge is dirt cheap.
Have it hot tanked at the same time.
Hot tank cam bearings and brass freeze plugs. $75.00 at my machine shop.

Buy a set of bearings and follow the "map" on which bearing goes in which hole.
Line the oil hole up with the hole in the main cap. Regardless if there is a groove or not.

What map? I got 5 bearrings ina box. And I assumed I would be lining up both oil holes. After all, if its coverred by bearing material why have the hole?

Hoss, Info MEANT to say the oil hole in the block that comes from the main saddle, not the main "cap"....... Failure to line up these oil passages WILL be FATAL..............Moneypitt

Ah,,,I know what he meant. But thanks for tryin` to clear up something.;)
Yeah, machine shop wants too much for me on this deal. I really want to do the cam bearrings. Only thing I`ve never tried. I`ve also got a spot in the cylinder wall that .120 wouldn`t take out. I say run the bitch. I`m also running same ring set and mains. Its gonna be fun.

Should I be using max shaft @ 2.1248 plus min clearance @ .0007 giving me 2.1255 as my choice of bearing tool?

Hoss, spend the money and have the block hot tanked. Its very well worth it. The cam bearings are just as important. One chunk of shit plugs up a oil hole and thats what you will have...SHIT;)

The motor was rebuilt already. I ran it only for a few hours total. Ok, maybe more than a few. Several. There is nothing but a little surface rust in it. Rubbins racin`. I really might not keep the boat.
I`ve hot tanked alllmy motors that needed it. This one doesn`t.
I need help with cam bearring tool! Please.

The local equipment rental places sometimes have a cam bearing tool. They do around here. Even have ring groove cleaners for rent.
Some blocks have a different bearing in each location and you need to follow the "map" so the bearings end up correct. Not sure about Ford.
Oh yea oil hole lines up with the main bearing saddle ;) Thanks Moneypitt

Put the cam bearings in the freezer. They will drop in place. Make sure you know what way they go. I did this once a long time ago. It worked great.

Tuesday evening I get the tool.
I hear ya. On Detroits, although a floating piston, you boil the pistons and freeze the pins then assemble. They won`t ever come off, even without clips.

Hoss. do yourself a really big favor and replace the main bearings. not only is it allways a good idea once they have been torqued and ran, but you also had alot of crap running through that oiling system.

Hoss,
Cam bearings are whole lot of fun, they require a little "finesse" to install. If you have never done it before be very careful.
I am not sure about BBF but BBC has a taper as it goes towards the back.
IMO I would always hot tank the block during a teardown but especially after a failure of parts that leaves metal in the oil.
The cam install tool is the way to go. I want to buy one but I borrow my buddies instead.
Good luck.

I am going to have to knock out the rear plug to do the last bearing. Where do I get a new one? Ford dealership? My bearings have a taper on either side.

I doing the same job, all my plugs came in one kit, but I know you buy a cam hardware kit that contains just galley plugs and rear cam plug. Most auto supplies sell them and they are inexpensive, my whole kit was $17.00. I'll post some pic's tomorrow.

Any "good" auto parts store should have cam plugs available separately.

Hoss, you MAY be able to just get the ones you need directly from the brg manuf. I know I've bought single rings when a couple of top ones got broke during installation..... Moneypitt
