Does anyone run a water separator?
If so, what do you recommend?
I think I'd prefer one that I could inspect visually and drain, instead of the ones that look like an oil filter. Just a thought.

I'm running one but it's the kind that looks like an oil filter so you can't see what you've got. No complaints so far.

No, But that is does not mean I should not run one.I boat from may to september and usually have an ethanol additive in the gas I use. If you let the engine sit for awhile pull out the bottom flat bowl screw and drain the gas out. this wil prevent problems and corrosion.

Always use one now because of bad gas in a boat I had that caused me to (trouble shoot) for a long time to find out the problem and as soon as I hooked up the filter instant results!
I use the Perma cool type with the drain in the bottom of the filter.

I like to use the racor filter with the clear (blue tinted) bowl for gasoline. They are only coast guard rated for open engine compartments though. they have a drain in the bottom of them that makes it really easy to get the water out. if you get the right filter housing assembly they even have one with a primer pump thats pretty trick. Just my .02 worth

If your are seriously asking, you are not an idiot, your an idiot if you dont konw and dont ask.
It goes on the fuel system. I have mine before the fuel pump. The gas goes through it and the separator gets the water out of the fuel. Some are filters too.

I use a combo filter/separator, it's a generic AC Delco unit, almost all car parts places stock the filter elements so they're easy to find and cheap too. I change the filter every season. I'm real happy with it..

Thanks for all the input, guys.
I ended up buying 2 Mercruiser filter/water separators. 1 for each tank, so that if I have a really bad tank the other side can still funtion. They were only $50 at a local shop (Sunset Marine) and It'll be cheap to replacethe filters as necessary. I can screw in one of those nicer ones if I decide that I want to be able to inspect it or bleed it empty in the future.
I'm suprised that I never added one of these before. It seems like a no-brainer, but then, I have been pretty brainless over the years.
