Volvo Penta 290 drive won't stay up by itself!! It takes about 6 hours but eventually falls all the way down and I end up having to pull the trim up again. I haven't found any fluid leaks. Any suggestions? Right now I'm using a tie down strap to keep it up while trailering.
Yes, I'm working on getting some pictures for y'all.

Do you have the old style (no reservior) pump? If so, they were known for leakage through the check valves. There is a direct replacement pump available that will fix it- around $400.

So does that mean it's leaking internally? Or should I see some fluid. I'll look into the pump and figure out wich model it is. Thanks for the help.

The check valves are what keep the fluid from re-entering the pump, once the motor stops. If they go bad, the oil just drains back into the pump.
Can you snap a pic? How old is the drive and pump?

It's an '88 Crusader 21 footer and I think it's all original. 5.7 350 with a VP 290 drive. I'll be on the water this weekend so I'll finally get a chance to take some photo's.
I checked out your homepage. WOW!! Nice work on your Cordova. I love those old daycruisers, although I can't tell how old (or new) yours is! Did your 280 have the exhuast routed through the outdrive at one time like the 290? If so, can it be converted to through transom? I'd like to add some spunk to the intake but only if I can hop up the exhaust too.

...although I can't tell how old (or new) yours is!Thanks for the compliment...working on my old boat has been an "adventure" to say the least. It is a 1981, but I've replaced/fabricated almost everything (except the fiberglass) at one time or another.

I'd like to add some spunk to the intake but only if I can hop up the exhaust too. Yep...mine started as a stock 350/280 package. When I rebuilt the motor, I did away with my stock exhausts, bought some manifolds, elbows, a blockoff plate, and tips. With some guts and a big hole-saw...I had through-transom exhaust. I mounted mine below the swimsteps, so it is very quiet at idle.
This summer I converted mine to a 290 (for the hydraulic trim), and it should be back on the water in a couple weeks- I just need to fabricte a steering bracket.
The ironic thing is that I bought a used (1988) 290 transom shield and hydraulics, and I am replacing the old pump this weekend- it looks very straightforward. The wiring and hydraulic lines are very close.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Good luck with that swap. Hopefully it will go smoothly.
I appreciate your help with this stuff. Not many Volvo Penta's on this board. I'm heading out to Buena Vista this weekend for my first real trip in this boat. Dropped it in Perris a few weeks ago but it was such a zoo that we left in disgust after a couple hours.
When I get back I'll post some pics and start a new thread about how my trim indicator seems to be on the blink!!
Thanks agian!!

Hey HH: how'd that swap workout for ya? Not too shabby.
It took a little longer than I anticipated- most of a day. But then again, I had a little fabricating to do. The lines and electrical were very straightforward, but the mounting brackets are different, and the pump sizes are a little different, so I moved it a little. Topped it off with some oil...and we're good to go.
The drive has not moved since Saturday- no leaks, and no falling down.

The drive has not moved since Saturday- no leaks, and no falling down. Very Nice!! Mine's droppin' faster than I originally thought. So fast that I had to tie it up just sittin in the water last weekend so not to bang the bottom with it.
Any info on that pump would be much appreciated.

Thanks It's a Volvo part...I think #3861027 ("VPA Pump Kit")
Inside word is that dealer cost is $273. If you're looking for a knowledgeable Volvo dealer, talk to Grant at Sea & Ski Marine in Costa Mesa (888)732-6754. He's one of the best I've found locally....I think he wants $400 for one.

Looks great! Thanks for the info. I'll probly order the pump late fall and go from there. What do you think about M&K Marine? (formerly Shaw Marine) in Hawthorne? There the closest shop to where I live.

It seems the better Volvo guys don't do Merc. Most of the ones I found that do both just hung a Volvo sign out there to get more business.
The drives still up...

Looks like I'll be calling Sea & Ski Marine!! The guy I talked to this morning about the pump gave me the "business" about how you have to do the whole kit which replaces all the parts involved with the hydrolics. Parts are $1500 and add $600 labor to that!!!
Uh, hello, Sea & Ski? Havasu Hangin' sent me!!

Uh, hello, Sea & Ski? Havasu Hangin' sent me!! Yeah...those guys are out there.
The parts he's talking about are probably the cylinders and the exterior lines.
My drive was off, but Grant replaced the outside lines for $75. He said the cylinders are around $300/set, but rarely go bad, unless there's alot of corrosion from salt water- mostly the fittings. He didn't see a need to replace mine.
The only thing left in the system is the interior lines, which are probably $75 or so, but should last a looooong time.
So the whole system shouldn't be anymore than $900 plus labor (which you can do yourself if you know how to use a wrench).
BTW...the drives still up.

Doh!
