View Full Version : Campbell Update: SHE RUNS!

Well, after a long three years, we finally took my 20' Campbell out for a maiden voyage yesterday at Castaic. We ran it with most of the interior out of the boat (just in case something happened), but after a few fixes the carpet, motor box, and back seat can go in.
After rebuilding or re-engineering every single part of the boat, it ran surprisingly well. The porpoising problem is solved... she takes a nice set and rides well. The full-length cav plates work bitchin, and the new strut angle/location made a big difference. The turbo 496 runs like a top, and the new electrical system worked well.
The only problems we had were a wrong prop (I'm saving up for a new Menkins three blade), and a vibration coming out of the freshly overhauled v-drive that might be a bad mating surface on the four-bolt flange, and might be a bad output shaft. Otherwise, things went perfectly!
I'd like to thank my dad for building this boat with me. I walked into this project with my eyes open (I've done enough restos to know how much work/money they are), but I figured it would be a great opportunity to work together and bond while building a cool ride. I was right. It was a great experience, and I can't wait to use it this summer. Thanks to everyone on the board for the support/parts/advice.

Dan,
Congratulations, the boat and motor look great. Are you running a C-500 box?

Hey Mike!
Thanks for the kind words. I just got your PM, I think my dad wants to hold onto the intercooler for future use in his flatty. I'm actually running an ACE Champion box.
The boat had a gnarly vibration when I bought it, and we figured a new prop shaft would fix the problem. Guess not. But... the shop that rebuilt it is being super cool about the whole thing, and said that with these drives 90% of the time if there's a vibration it's because the flange has a flaw and needs to be filed square. If that doesn't fix it, I'll bring it in to them and hopefully they can get it fixed up.
Dan

I spoke with your dad last week and that's what he said, although if he changes his mind just let me know. Also, I've got a nice ss Menkins 3 blade that I might be willing to part with  .
I don't know about the Ace box, but with the C-500 when I braced it up alot of vibration went away.
Anyway, Have fun with the Cambell, looks like it's going to be alot of fun.

Clean looking ride. Cool thing about it....It doesn't look like every other boat out there. Nice job.

Very nice, let us know how she runs after you get the vibration fixed. I had a Champion in my first 21' Howard and it was smooth as could be. I may still have one of the flanges, if I can find it.

Thanks guys. We tried to keep the re-gel simple and classic, so it'll never go out of style. I'm pretty excited to get the whole interior in it and take the thing to Havasu. Campbell's Spring Roundup is in the beginning of May, so hopefully we'll have all the bugs worked out by then.
I'm working on getting a few clips uploaded to google video, I'll post them if I can figure it out.

Love It....Projects with the Dad can be coool. My 75 year old Dad just bought a 18' Aqua-Craft and brought it home yesterday and I'm sure we will get some one on one together...If ya know what I mean. I love the classic lines of early day cruisers. Nothin like themmm

That's a cool Spectra. I dig those boats, they have a much better bottom than the Campbells.

I like all the spectras myself . Built like a tank . I've asked this before and wondered if you missed it ? Did your dad ended up with the 32 from Seattle ?
I'm still kicking myself not to jump on the offer when the owner of that one would have taken a trade on my 24 .

That was really cool. Your Campbell is a really nice boat. You can hear that vibration when you took off in the video. I sounds like you will get that handled easily. You did a great job on that boat. Do you ever boat on Nacimiento, it would be cool to see that boat in person.

Hello Spectras only,
This is David Kahn, Dan's dad. Yes I did buy the 32 Spectra and I just love it. That looks like it might be my boat in the pictures that you posted. I looks just like that now, and still looks like a new boat. Tommy Burrows and Denny Nish were the previous owners that I bought it from, and they did some nice upgrades, a custom machined billet insturment panel, & Imco exhaust with silent choice. I just put two new G.M. Performance parts 454 H.O. roller motors, with bigger cams and a few other things, they dynoed 525hp, also did a new interior and color sand and buff on the gel coat. I will be keeping this one a long time.

Where Did You Get The Colored Water Lines

InKahntrol

All the plumbing stuff (including the colored water lines) came from Orme Bros. in Reseda, CA. They're very knowledgable and good guys.

I think we've got the vibration figured out. I called the machine shop that rebuilt the drive, and they thought it was far more likely that the coupler that slides onto the prop shaft is warped than the actual V-drive output shaft. We pulled it off the other night, and sure enough it was messed up. My dad took it to his friend's machine shop and spun it on a lathe, and all is fixed now. This saturday will be round 2 at the lake. :rollside:

Congrats to you Dave . I'll be in San Diego this summer around aug 1-7 and would love to check out your boat and your son's . A buddy of mine had a 32 here in vancouver with 454's TRS drives. He sold it to get a 38ZX Donzi . The 32 is still around . The guy who has it posted picture once on Brent's website but doesn't return e-mails .I never liked the colour and the arch my buddy had custom made for it , but still wouldn't mind to have it for a resto project.
here's the local 32 >

Don't feel sorry for the Jeep :argue: :D .It pulls the Spectra as good as this older Dodge with a Cummins :) . The last year of the 5.2 [ 318cu]pushrod engine is an excellent tow vehicle. If you know bc ,the GC pulls that Spectra up on the Coquihalla highway like a champ all loaded up.

Took her out yesterday, got all the little details sorted out and the interior installed. It's much quieter with the motorbox on, and ran like a champ. So here's the question... which name do ya like better?
