My mr would like to replace his V6 engine with a V8 engine in about 1-3 years, does anyone know if this can be done, and if so, would anything else need to be changed out? Thanks for your help

Not worth it. Trade it or sell it, what ever it is. Go buy a V8.

bottom line is the smog laws in good ole california say:
NOPE!
must retain all original equipment.

what type of tranny is in it? if it is a 3spd non overdrive u may have to change that out..and also since ur going to a v8 u will have to change out the ecu/computer. It is totaly not worth it. just for a long block you are looking at a jobber price of around 2199.00 plus core...I work for ATK Engines. All pepboys kragen autozone and thousands of shops around the country get there engines through us..if you give me the year make and model I can get u a price tommorow both retail and shop..Best if u know a mechanic who will buy it for u and wont mark up the price..but let me know..

sorry if I did not make myself clear, he has a ford F150 V6 and wants to swap the engine out for more towing power, we are looking at getting a 5th wheel and according to someone at a trailer place, they said his towing capacity is low.... thats why he wants to possibly keep the truck and just swap engines.

Sheesh - it sounds like you need to lift your truck up and drive a whole new one underneath it :D
You probably could use a 250 or even a 350 chassis for heavy-duty towing and weight capacity. And a larger engine, heavier-duty transmission, would be the norm.
Seriously, it sounds like there's almost nothing in your truck that's usable for the job you want it to do. Sell it and buy a new one. :frown:

Trade the truck. Or maybe put a chip in it. Smog laws being what they are, engine must match original.

ford didn't put a v6 in a truck, probably a 300 straight six in that case the trans is the same a v8, just pull a v8 out of the same year, get the wiring harness and the ecu, and some motor mounts and a different rad and you will be set.

ok so you get a new truck for a fifth wheel and realize how bad gas milage sucks even with the V10. if you look at all the fifth wheels you see rolling down the road you'll notice they're all diesel. mega torque ,good milage:D a bigger chassis(f250 or bigger) would be a much better way to go.:D

Blown, I think in the later 90's (97 or so) you could get a V-6.

actually ford put the 4.2 v6 in trucks starting about 97

Not sure what size 5th wheel you are talking about, but towing a larger unit with a F-150 does not seem like the right choice. After the engine swap, transmission changes you will need to make changes to the suspension to handle the new weight you want to tow:(
If it is strictly for towing keep your old truck to run around town and buy a used Diesel Truck.:D

Buy a new truck.

I agree with Jungle ,don't bother with the old truck spend the extra cash and get a new one,a diesel, loads of pulling power
plus higher resale value.pulling heavy items with a gas,you can just watch the dollar bills fly out the tailpipe.

Not true. You can install any engine that was originally available for that year make and model. Does not require a Refree inspection if you go that way.
You can also upgrade to any newer engine if you add the emission control systems for the newer engine. You could put an 2004 supercharged Lightning engine in if you wanted. This does require a Referee inspection.

To tow a 5th wheel would require the engine, tranny, rear end, suspension and more to be replaced. It can be done, but why? It would have no resale value, insurance would be a bitch and it still would not tow as well as a newer F250.
And the F150 did offer a V6 during one of their Chevy moments.

Worried about fuel mileage? No problem. There was an article here about 2 years ago where a guy wanted to install a fifth wheel on his Civic. Hatchback of course. Ask riodog!
I think a fifth wheel in a F150 is an awsome idea. Can I watch when you hook up?

You're smoking criznack if you think an F150 will handle a fifth wheel.
Power and running gear are way too light for any kind of heavy towing.
Dump that thing and get a clean used Dodge diesel... I guarantee it'll be cheaper in the long run...
Good Luck
