This was the most overspill I've seen in years!
http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/500/350Glroy_Hole1-med.jpg
The concrete structure is barely visible underwater. It may not look like it in the photo, but the water is about five feet over the concrete. This lake is spilling over big time!

Here's a shot of the other side of the dam at the hydroelectric power station. Look at the pick-up truck for scale:
http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/500/350Dam1-med.jpg
Look at the blast from that nozzle!
http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/500/350Dam2-med.jpg
Don't fall in the 'Hole; you'll come out the other side as minced meat.

That's bad ass. that nozzle needs a place diverter though
That looks like a person standing right next to the nozzle.
I wonder if they can raise and lower that concrete intake or if its just a permanently fixed height?

I'll bet they could improve the hydro output with one of those Tornado Fuel Savers.

Those are cool pictures. Has any one ever ened up checking out that glory hole to close. It doesn't seem like there is to much protection around it.

Kinda green lookin but still a good lookin lake.
I've heard there is old town in tact under water, somewhere near a bridge that occasionaly shows when the water is down???
Any truth to this.
It would be well worth the trip to scuba dive on it if it's true.
Note to self: No dive-dive near the hole!!!

Note to self: No dive-dive near the hole!!! Greg, The town at the bottom of Berryessa was called Montecello. During the drought in the mid 90s and the lake was 79' down what was left of the town was exposed. There is just building foundations and a couple of bridges left, any building material that could float was removed before the lake filled. In the early days of Berryessa tree trunks from orchards floated to the surface and did alot of damage to passing boats, I guess it was too much trouble to dig up all the tree trunks.

Greg, New Melones Res is the same way, old town and old stamp mill, lots of old foundations still there under the Bridge toward Angels Camp. Back in 92 (I think) lake was really low and I got an old map and we went riding quads out there and checking out the old stuff, it was pretty cool to compare the pics to what it used to be.

The Glory Hole concrete structure is fixed and essentially serves at the spillway.

The orange string of floatation devices in the left of the photo is all there is for protection. My friend has had his boat up to that point; boat drifted in the direction of the Glory Hole. He got the heebie-jeebies, started his boat and punched it outta there.

Rexone, this is indeed funny.
And just to let everyone know (in case the above pic thorws anybody off), the Glory Hole is about 30-feet in diameter and could swallow a boat.

Oh, one more thing:
talked to my Frind Toby last night. Toby has a trailer at Monticello Resort. Lake level is so overfilled that they had to pull the trailer forward and up to the road in the resort. His deck was in water and the water came up to the road.:D

There's no law against having them yet. The tree huggers probably want them Zelots thinking it'll swallow all the boaters who get to close, so if it works to their advantage they won't have'em outlawed.

That nozze to the right is for when the water runs though the hydro-electric generators in the structure.

Water depth at the dam is 440 feet when the lake is at capacity, so I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that's a 400-foot drop from this point.

It is true about the old town of Monticello. All that is left are the foundations. The leveled all the building when they built the lake back in the late 50's.I think it was 57 or 58. My dad grew up in Napa and he use to party there when he was in high school. When the water is real low there are a few old bridges that are still intact. The foundations are visible across the lake from Berryessa Marina and Rancho Monticello resort when the water is clear.
Those pictures were taken last year or the year before that. I looked at the Glory hole this morning and it is at 86% capacity and 11'.97 below the rim of the glory hole. Nobody has ever been sucked in but there was a woman that commited suicide by jumping down the hole. All the water that goes down the Hole drops 200' then 90s through the Hydro electric generater, so you can imagine what you would look like after that. Not a pretty sight. That is the nosel you see in the pic. :squiggle:

This is a very popular lake for those of us in NorCal. It stays relatively full most of the season. Many boat clubs have their outings there. There is a big sheltered cove on the N.W. corner of the lake "under the bridge" that fills with hundreds of boats on a good weekend. Can't hardly drive through it. Several other arms and coves to explore. One of our favorite lakes. Al
