I know this has been done before but here it goes again.
What do I do about my computer? When ever I boot up, my home page has changed and there are four porn sites in my favorites. If I change the home page back and delete the sites from my favorites, its all good. But if I log off and use another identity in (wife or kids) it is back on their identity's. And when I switch it back to me, it is all there again.
I downloaded a spyware program from webroot, it found some spies, but does not fix anything.
What the hell do you do?

ad-aware 6.0 (CNET downloads)
Spybot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/)

The two HH recommended are good !

Like HH said.
Use that link AND ONLY THAT LINK!!! Do not use any clones like BPS Spyware Remover, SpyHunter etc. BPS Spyware is a pirated program with bad code that will screw up your pewter.

I use ad aware to get rid of the spyware. And use Window Washer to clean up all the other junk. Works for me..never a problem.

Don't act like you're not the one that saved the Porn into your favorites, now....;) :D
I use Spybot.... It "fixes the select problems".

Ad-aware is from http://www.lavasoft.de/
And spybot was already referenced.
I would start with those two. Once that is done, if you are still having problems I would look into CWShredder and HiJackThis! by Merijn. These require a lot more manual intervention, but I have been able to detect/remove "difficult" spyware on other's computers using these two.
The official site is http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html Looking at it, it looks as if some of the bad spyware is hijacking their site. If you are still having problems, post back.

So what else can happen if you don't use this program? I'm not having any problems like Out Cole'd but I'm concerned about somebody getting into my computer and getting personal info, photos of the kids, etc. Is that the kind of thing that can happen?
I'm on a DSL so I'm always hooked up. All this stuff is a little confusing to me and I've been using computers since I was a kid. There is a lot of shit to learn.

Stinger can help with some trojan stuff ...
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger
and somebody asked about security- ZoneAlarm is the firewall that I use. It has a free basic version and a bells and whistles version you gotta pay for.
ZoneLabs ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/application?namespace=zls_catalog&origin=global.jsp&event=link2.skuList&&zl_catalog_view_id=201)
Hope that helps someone. :)

Start with Spybot, which should be considered a routine part of maintenance on your computer. If you or your wife surf the web and are hit with pop up ads (usually at hobby related sites) then chances are you’re gonna have spyware files operating on your computer. Do a quick google search to understand what spyware files are.
You can also download the free Zone Alarm firewall that is very effective against people trying to snoop around your computer. Look for the Free download, that’s all you really need http://www.zonelabs.com/
Identity theft via the computer pales in comparison to the scumbag waiter or convenience store clerk who steals your card number by swiping it thru his own card reader/recorder in a manner of seconds. Not to mention all the good folks helping you open your cell phone accounts and the *janitors* that pilfer thru human resources/personnel files during their cleaning hours.
C2<------not worried about my info over the net cuz it’s a lot easier to get somewhere else!

And Stinger is also a great program. I never seen a trojan come across my computer until last week...got hit by 2 of them. Not via email, but by visiting hacked sites.

Two thumbs up for SpyBot and Ad-aware! Both are awesome programs, but you must use BOTH of them. They will each find files the other has missed.
These are the ONLY software programs that the network at my work will allow us to install. As a major law enforcement agency, we cannot take any chances with our computer files. I use it here and at home, and run them religiously every week. You'd be surprised how much crap they find!

I use Ad Aware from Lavasoft, and Zone Alarm Firewall. Ad Aware takes out the Spy-ware and Zone Alarm helps to keep them from downloading to my Puter.

I have to deal with this all the time a home and work. I've got 20 PC's a work and 4 at home...
My advice...
Scan, Scan, Scan. Use the adaware 6.0 (good and free), maybe purchase Norton Antivirus Professional which has a great spy ware killing program. Scandisk on thorough mode and repair automatically. Defrag...
Norton is the only one here that cost $$$ (about $70.00) and all should be done WEEKLY. It's like changing the oil in your boat or making sure the trailer tires have air in them...Don't let it get so bad or go so long that you have to shitcan everything on your hard drive and reload you software, that could burn up a weekend better spent drinkin or post whoring or something fun like boating...
I scan one type or another almost every night and never have a problem anymore. I make everyone at work do the same, and I have to babysit them to do it, else I'm taking all my time fixing thier screwed up machines...
Oh, and stay away from Kazaa...It's nothing but melicious code...
That's a bit more than .02, but you get the drift.

You should also go into control panel/add and remove programs. Look down the list of programs and see if there are any unknown toolbars installed and uninstall them.
Sometime the wife or kids may download and install these adult toolbars without knowing.
They may not be picked up by the spyware programs.

I had the same exact problem, and spybot programs did NOT solve the problem. Looky_lou has the closest recommendation to what I did to solve the problem. I had to call Microsoft Technicians and spent several hours going through several menus removing all sorts of programs and re-setting several settings.
These sights bury their code deep in the program file structure and could not be removed by simply resetting my home page or removing program files; they reset themselves every time I rebooted.
Call Microsoft, they are very aware of this issue and can resolve it relatively quickly

Did you run "check for updates" before you ran the check?
When you get software installed...there's usually a bunch of patches out by the time it gets on your computer.

Make sure you get the latest updates to Windows.
I had the same problem, but after I updated Windows and ran Spybot, most of it went away.
Check out PCHell.com also, they have alot of info on this kind of stuff.

I've never paid more than $22 for Norton's Systemworks Professional. All you get is the disk and one years updates (Just reinstall after one year for more updates) but who need the box and manual anyway?
2003 for $10 (http://www.pricegrabber.com/user_sales_getprod.php/masterid=616491/lot_id=200483/ut=43a68cfe67e927b8)
Forgot to add, you may be hosed if you run a spyware removal program and it has also hijacked your winsock. You won't be able to connect to the internet. I'll let the Pros tell you how to fix it.

Buy a brand new computer to start fresh! And then never log on to HB or RRL. There are too many links to porn! :D :D

I haven't found 1 program that does everything but by using the ones listed below I do not get any spam, ads, unwanted e-mail, pop-ups, etc. NOTHING !
I don't have any problems with any of my banking, open accounts, etc., HOWEVER by using all of the programs in conjunction with each other- the only thing that doesn't come through - I'm gonna catch heck for this- is Rex 1's ads on the opening page of HB.
If I mistakenly get into a porn site, and it looks interesting, I can browse it all day long and as soon as I exit said site, IT"S GONE ! Never to reappear.
I don't know anything about computers so it can't be this hard.
This is on Windows XP Pro.
AdAware 5.0
Ad Subtract
Norton Anti-spam 2004
Norton Antivirus
The Norton and Windows have built-in firewalls.
Then disconnect Windows messenger service.
For your e-mail, open outlook express, click on tools, click on message rules, make your own rules, block whom ever, or block certain words, etc.
This doesn't preclude the machine(s) from much of any other function, such as prevent it from downloading whatever you want, sending or receiving pics, files, it doesn't mess with any other machine on the network, I can even log in to another computer to play games with the IP address. ( it's called screw with the mods mind).
If you find that this doesn't work for you let me know as I haven't run across any problems yet.
Oxnard-it's a place!

Now what?
There were a few unwanteds that kept reappearing on my system despite using add/remove program, AVG and Ad-Aware. One of the programs I use recommends turning off system restore, running the program and then once the virus or other unwanted is taken care of turning the system restore back on. This worked for me. If yours is on maybe you could try that and run the programs again to see if it changes the outcome. :)

upon recommendation i downloaded the "Stinger " program and followed the rules, turned off the restore feature and restarted the comp. i'd say three quarters of the way thru the scan the blue screen of death appears and i have to start over, this is a pisser, now are there anymore tricks to be using this program or should i just delete it and go with the spybot s and d and the ad aware6that i just down loaded, also i notice that recenly my spybot congrats me and tells me there were no threats found, but run the Adaware after that and theres numerous new threats. What give here.
Thanks MikeVG

I was going to mention Linux and Mozilla/firebird.
How do you like Gentoo? Been a hardcore MS guy, but it's getting out of hand, not to mention the new OS to learn every 2 -3 years.Spend a lot of time keeping certified, I have no life.:D
I have looked at Red Hat and have installed Lindows, I guess most in Linux community don't like the Lindows, to commercial I guess.

Funny thing is that i reduced the size of the cache for websites or temporary internet files and how long to save them etc. and then cleared the temporary internet file, after having done that i have no immediate threats found on the Spybot, but still get 10 to 16 depending on how many sites i've visited with the Adware program.
