View Full Version : Hey OSO gang!

Hey gang! I visit this site quite often just to see what's going on being that I own a boat from the West Coast. There is not near the action here that takes place over at OSO but I'm betting you guys will change that.

Indy

Hey Wavejumppin, Indy from OSO here. Yea this place does not get nearly the volume that OSO does but the OSO board has become more of a chat room rather than a boat forum. Maybe it'll turn around for the better. It seems to go in circles. OSO is more relevant for my type of boating (salt water) rather than the lake type stuff that is talked about here. However I do own one of the only west coast boats in the Northeast. What type of west coast boat do you have and where do you boat?

Hey wavejumppin, I'll be hanging out over here from now on. I don't like the way OSO was heading. With the quality of guys like Too Old and the others I'm sure this board will take off.

I never spent anytime here in the past. Just looking for a pleasurable place to discuss boats.
I admit a strong bias for "offshore type" boats, but do most of my boating on bigger lakes.

Nice to see some familiar names. I have a sport boat, but love to discuss offshore types.
My next boat is going to be a Baja 212 Islander with the 496!!! Just waiting for the right time to pull the trigger!!
Also waiting for Merc 575 to come to GA and give me a ride on his bad boat!!!!!

Hey Too Old, will you be bringing that Sonic beauty to the Atlantic anytime this summer to give that nice hull a work-out? Nothing like bustin through some of that chop to put a smile on your face!! What power do you have in the boat now?

Kirk, I know you didn't mean to type it, but I LMAO at the "With the quality of guys and gays like Too Old" So, you saying Fred is gay? LOL! Funny typo.
Yup, I'm miffed I'll lost my 1000 post seniority I had on OSO, but I like the format of this board, and while it's not as busy, it's picking up with OSO heading down the "I'm the moderator and I don't gve a rip" path.

Oh my....yep. Long long long story. But Marc is a fine piece of work. You're not the only one. You could finish off about 40 cases of beer before I was done. LOL!
I take my Fountain there (to that building) to the new Nielson's. Bill Nielson owns it. He's a stand up guy, but no offshore lines. He's a great mechanic though, and really helps me out and loves to work on the go fast boats. In fact he works on a 35 nordic that Marc "sold". http://free.***boat.net/ubb/smile.gif
Marc, though. Wow. Those Nordics are nice boats, though, just too bad what happened to those that bought them through J&M.

You need to give OSO a chance on the Moderator issue. The huge demand for more oversite just began within the last week. It takes some time for it to really soak in and I think it has now. They have already accepted the fact that moderators are needed and they are actively starting the implementation. No message board will ever have my exclusive participation, I am free and comfortable to participate on all. It's only a matter of time before simular issues start to happen here. It's the nature of the beast, internet message boards.

When I left this morning I didn't think it would be a big deal,OSO contacted me about why I left, and I explained my reasons, lurked back over a few times to check on things and couldn't believe the venom being spouted, felt I was glad to be out of there. Bill,
Don't leave us lake boaters in the dark.!!!!
The key is to love boating and all that it stands for. I know where you are coming from.
I remember when I first looked at OSO, and saw people discussing putting showers on their boats. I thought to my self, "what the hell would you do with a shower on a boat, just jump in the stinking lake or go home to shower"!!!!!!!!!!! This is one example of how these forums have taught me about boating. I look back at the "shower thing" and laugh my ass off about what I thought.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeff,
My old boat had that too. Only change is for 2002 the color inside the "P" is silver only. Back in 2000 you could get red, blue and purple.

Good for you, Travis.Doesn't matter so much if the things you learn transfer to a career or not, you'll have that degree and no one can take it away from you. I got mine over 35 years ago and tho I don't use much of what I learned(or mostly forgot) in my business now that degree is still on my wall. I would still be mad at myself if I had given up. Hang in there,it's worth it.

Hi Gang:
I came over from OSO (Luvoffshore) to to look for more about boating and let some of the BS settle down. I figured quit lurking here so much and register and I do enjoy the lake boaters to. But nothing says I can't be a lurker over there occasionally. Definately a bunch of familiar names here. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Travis,
You'll find you won't ever be disappointed you got an education. If you doubt me, I'll give you the names of some friends who regret not having got one.
Hang it there. It's worth it. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/smile.gif

Don't give me to much credit, it's only a assostiates degree in design.... Hopefully I can find some sort of a job with a boat manufacture here in michigan.. We have the following in michigan
Awesome Powerboats
Sunsation Powerboats
Ocean Express
Skater
Powerquest
Fourwinns.
They all recieved a copy of my resume and I heard nothing from them... So I am going to have my aunt make me a new resume to make me look a little more desirable... If I can't get my foot in the door of any of these companys I will be crushed, this is all I want to do... rigg, paint, build and sniff the great fiberglass of our future boats. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/biggrin.gif
Well we'll see I guess...
Nice seeing ya here TOO OLD

Don't sell yourself short there Travis.
Don't let the lack of contact after sending out resumes end the quest.
There's no substitute for dropping by and letting them see how enthusiastic you are.

Fred is right travis sometimes you just have to go knock on the door and let the see you really want to work. Lot's of times they just drop your resume in the file cabinet and never even look at it. So don't get discouraged http://free.***boat.net/ubb/smile.gif

But the bad thing about that is .. all they will see is me.. they will see a young punk kid lookin for a job, thinkin that I will be irresponsiable, and I am the total opposite. I don't know what it will take to get into the door.. I think you are right.. I might have to pack up my resume's and stuff and show up at there door step.. I'll have to get my self in gear here, i procrasnate alot..
Thanks too old

Well Travis I don't really know you but you seem to be bright and that goes a long way, The degree will not hurt either. Just because you are young isn't a bad thing at all. Sometimes they are looking for new blood so to speak. Now go get em boy you can do it, I have faith in you as I know Fred and all the other do....... http://free.***boat.net/ubb/smile.gif

I would also think that some of the builders you mentioned lurk around this board in their normal course of business. Maybe one of them will stumble on this thread an see that your enthusiasum is genuine. A smart manufacturer will value enthusiasum and a willingness to start at the bottom above some other attributes. Good luck, keep on pluggin along, you will be discovered. Robert

Travis:
I've been in my field of (board drafting in the early days) but these days it is computer graphics on Autocad/Microstation 2D & 3D) and have changed jobs more than a few times. Just be a little aggressive about things and bug them all a little and they will see you aren't kidding around. Let them know that boating is all that flows in your blood and try to offer them some of your enthusiasm like being dependable, always looking for more factory/dealer training, you're a fast/enthusiastic learner and see if they would sponsor you in some additional schooling. Somebody is bound to take notice! http://free.***boat.net/ubb/cool.gif

Mark nice to see you. How many more days until the new boat? I'm sure the countdown has begun
Travis, when you visit these manufacturers looking for a job, they see a young enthusiastic guy that was motivated enough to make an effort to come by and make contact. That would mean more to me than a mailed in resume.
Keep in mind things change. If they don't have room for you the firt visit, I'd make a second visit in a month or so. Keep after it.
Think how sweet it would be working at a job you enjoy.

Hey Traviss, when you get your foot in the door let me know. I am starting to get very disastified with my job. My dream job is working for a boat manufacture. I work in the field of QC. so hopefully I could make someone's boat a little more complaint proof.

Travis,
I think I know you well enough to say that you aren't a quitter. You wouldn't have stuck with school and put the effort into it if you were. I know it's a struggle for you, but I also know that you are determined to finish.
Stay focused, keep working at it, and like the others have said, you will NEVER regret getting your degree. Even if it is just an associates degree, it is a diploma nonetheless.
The job hunt isn't always so easy either, but you just have to be patient and diligent.
You can do it.......because, yes,.........You da MAN!! http://free.***boat.net/ubb/wink.gif http://free.***boat.net/ubb/biggrin.gif http://free.***boat.net/ubb/biggrin.gif http://free.***boat.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hello everyone!!! I've been here for some time now, but this Offshore section was really quiet. Now that the Props have been turned, it has opened the hatch to another site where people can meet and talk about boats. How does that ref say it? "LET'S GET IT ON!!!" LOL LOL No emotion icons here...Oh well! Welcome all!!!

Traaaaaaavis, I don't know you, but it sounds like you're getting some good advice here. Stick it out to get your degree and try to show up personally at some of the manufacturers that are local to you. They may not be able to give you a job right off the "bat", but maybe if they get to know you a little bit they will appreciate the help once sumer kicks in and they are swamped. It's always easier for me to hire somebody if I enjoy their personality. If you are lucky enough to live close to these builders, maybe you can offer to help cleaning up on the weekends just to get to know them and show them that you are willing to start at the bottom. It's probably not the most fun, but at least you would be around great boats and have a possibility to get the job you want.
OK, off my soapbox now.

Travis,
Hang in there. The degree shows the employer that you are can finish what you set off to do.
Getting a foot in the door is difficult but you'll do just fine. Persistance pays off. Make sure you don't just write off a company if they don't show an interest right away. Make sure you keep in touch with them, keep your name in front of them too.

Just glad to see some balance in the types
of boats talked about. I think both 18' jets
with totally chromed engines hangin out and
35' offshores with twin are both very cool.
I'd like to have one of each. Right now I'm
somewhere in the middle.
