I have a general question for the group. We have been looking at buying a place to stay at the river. We have looked all over Parker and Havasu and can't find exactly what we want...near the water, doesn't cost 5 godzillion dollars, you get the idea. We keep hearing that we should check out Bullhead. I have never spent any time boating above Havasu. I hear quicker water, colder water, more water level fluctuations, etc. What do you think? We still want those fun, party, drinking kind of fun days but wonder if we will be too far up the river to enjoy the fun. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks :D

I'm closing escrow on a place in BHC in 2 weeks. I run this section of river alot during the summer, so it made sense to buy a place REAL close to the water. It's a different attitude upriver..... smaller boats, older established areas and more of a community feel than I felt in Parker/Havazoo. Not a big Spring Break kind of area from what I've seen, and that's just fine with me.
Guess it all comes down to one thing.... what do you REALLY want from a river place?

My aunt lives in B.H. on the water and I use to take my 20' Dana jet and park on her dock. The bad thing was you sit and wait for the water to come up sometimes untill 1:00 and my boat would float in about 9" of water. Don't stay docked to late you just might stay the night this is during mid to late summer. I'll look up the pics of the dry dock last year

You said it. Water is colder, and faster. It goes way up and way down. Sometimes it doesn't come up till lunchtime.
Oh yeah, the rocks are bigger too.
But.....its cheaper. More waterfront or near water properties are available. I only know of one boat up bar, and the Avi that you can go to as a destination for food or drinks. The sandbar and Havasu are a long drive down river.

We had a place in Parker for 15 years and it has some very nice places on the water and close to the water. Take a look at mobile homes on both sides of the river. Rent for the space runs around $300 a month for space. You can also put a travel trailer in a River Land for less. They will move the trailer out for you when you need it and then put it away. The Parker Strip is great during the week and a little crowded on the weekends. The water is warm and their is a lot to see. Yes the water is warm and great to swim in all summer.

I personally like the part of the River north of Topock..all the way up to Davis Dam. Yeah the water is colder, but when it's 115 degrees, thats exactly what I want anyway !! There are plenty of nice beaches between Topock and Laughlin to hang out and drink/bbq. The houses are definitely cheaper...but not for long I'm afraid ! The Avi is always a fun stop for gas/ice/beer/pizza, and their awesome fireworks shows during the summer. I guess I'm getting old, but I prefer the northern end of the River, it's alot quieter and not as crowded and hectic as Havasu or Parker. Of course the Sandbar is still pretty close if you wanna have some fun and check out the pasties ! I just prefer staying in Laughlin for the gambling, drinking and seafood buffets ! I don't worry to much about the water levels in the morning because I would rather sleep in and launch later in the day (11-Noon). Then I can either launch at Katherine's, BHC, or take a short drive down to Park Moabi if I wanna make a Sandbar/Havasu trip. I guess its' a matter of preference...but basically any part of the River is fun as long as you have a boat, and a cooler full of ice cold Silvers !

Mandelon's right. The water is colder, but when it's 110 out, I don't really mind. Big rocks? Don't know about that, must be a prop problem. Never have run it on the rocks in my jet.
The water level does fluctuate quite a bit, but the nice thing is, when you LIVE there, it really doesn't matter what time you hit the water! There are 2 boat up bars, almost next to each other... Lazy Harry's, and Iguana's. Both easy walking distance from the house even in the dead of summer. It definitely isn't Havasu, but like Mandelon said, there's more waterfront, and near waterfront property. I couldn't afford to be 5 houses from the water in Havasu, and launching and lounging at Lazy Harry's is great. Again, it all depends on what you want outa the place......

A good friend of mine has a place in willow valley which is about 5 min down from the Avi casino. It's cool up there and great to get away from the crowds for ski runs etc. Still only 45 min from the sandbar though.

We make several river trips each summer and stay in friends houses either in Bullhead or Needles...They both have their advantages...
Bullhead-you got the casinos right there for night time activity, Lake Mojave is close by and I have seen plenty of topless women in the Laughlin Lagoon!! Not like the sandbar but it's still fun...Also got Lazy harry's bar right on the water and the AVI is only 15 minutes to the south...
Needles...I think Needles is in the perfect location, other than being in Havasu...The sandbar is only a 20 minute ride south or you can go all the way to the channel...Park Moabi has nice beaches and Topoc bar is right there..if you want to run upriver to Bullhead you can...water is usually deeper there than in Bullhead...
Tough choice.;)

I know about the rocks...every other year I would ding up a prop. Usually cuz I wasn't paying attention, or went out too early. You did notice that the rocks get smaller and smaller the further down river you go right? :D
I'd look at it this way; Being on any part of the river is better than not being at the river at all.
