Do you have any gears at all to try? Props make so much difference. I'm thinking 40's.

i have a set of 25 , a buddy of mine has 43, and also has a big 17 and a small 17

25's won't be enough gear, but the 43's might. Give them a pass. Should be ballpark.

when you say wont be enough, will turn more rpm?

Yes. Especially on the big end. Holding a blown gasser at 7000 at a max is going to require a pretty big gear. Especially with that prop.

will it help to use a 11 1/2 by 17?

I would use the 17. It would be a better choice for a hydro than a 15 1/2. Borrow the 43's and a 17 and see if it will pull it.

If the v drive still has the water jackets those 43's won't fit. Pretty good chance they have been cut out already.
Are you running a trans?

The 15 pitch hydro prop is NOT going to work good for what you want to do.
Use the 17 pitch AND the 1.40 to hold your motor at that RPM.

Mid 30's and big prop for shorter 1000 foot track. I'm guessing your boat is a medium to heavy lay-up??

Yeah it is medium layup and 18 feet long. I will need some gears pretty quick, who has 35 - 40 for sale and no i cannot affort trans at this time. any educated guess on mph with that power 35-40 gears,11 * 17 prop ,rpm 7200 THANKS ALOT

You've received a lot of excellent information here, but one thing that hasn't been addressed is the ET you're interested in. You asked about MPH with a certain combination, but are you going to lake race at 1000' or are we going to see you at the "Cove" this year. You're throwing out a lot of variables here. The deciding factor on the total combination (if it's possible with what you have to work with) is "how quick you wanna get there".
Later,
John

Well the only races we have around close are 1000ft,and would like to get there(other end)asap. And yes hopefully we can pass tech at one race and be able to attend the shootout.

Thomas, where are those 1000' races you are referring to, other than Smokin in the Cove?

SMOKING IN THE COVE is the only sanctioned races, but they have some races at fort cobb twice a year(hillbilly nationals) which is only 50 miles from home and alot of friends show up ,there was 56 boats entered last year, they are not regulated by any organization,so it is alot cheaper and alot of fun, they class boats by what they see not mph or et If you want some good laughs you outta come check it out Thomas

Superdave, I just pulled a set of 48% gears out of my casale and it still had the water jacket. It just had some minor clearancing. I did take it out to fit the 54's though.

Thomas, I forgot about Ft. Cobb, Wes Bailey tried to get me up there but at the time we were too busy racing on the circuit.
I know quite a few of the guys that run up there.
