Going to look at a 95 22 foot Scarab this weekend have a Sanger flat, looking for different kicks. The boat is stock 454 stock everbody, claims 70 mph supposed to be in great shape with tandom trailer. The guy wants 19,500 said it has 350 hours on it. Can I get more mph for a meager investmemt,I KNOW SPEED costs. Good buy bad buy...
Ken in  Mich..What is this thing worth in the west?

I have a friend with the same boat. 350 mag for power. I have yet to GPS it, but I bet it struggles for 60mph. I have a hard time with 70mph on a 310hp 454.

A few years back I almost bought that same type of boat, guy claimed 70mph as well(@4500ft.altitude).Luckily a friend of mine who knew a whole bunch more than me about boats came along...
He checked the prop size, the guy was spinning a 18pitch 3 blade.Figure if he turned it 10,000 rpm's she might see 70.
Long story short later that summer I saw that boat at the lake with a new owner.
I asked him how she ran...He said between 56-58mph
(@4500ft.)on the speedo. So figure low 60's at sea level.
I have heard that they kinda have a propensity to chine walk at WOT,but I don't know for sure...

Are we talking a 454 mag or a standard 454? There's a lot of difference.
My 26' Scarab with 502 mag will see mid 60's. It weighs over 5k loaded down.

That boat will not put up those numbers. Why? A friend of mine has a 22' Scarab, 1998 with a Procharged 454 that runs 72 mph with a 27P Mach propeller.
He is selling it actually. Its all white with a black scarab on the deck.

We still haven't established if either boat is running a 454 mag or a standard 454. We're talking 70hp difference here guys.

A side note to this is that my other friend has '97 23'Scarab SCS like in the movie Faceoff. This boat is the real deal. I dont know what it is layed up with, but it is light yet strong. Have not GPSed Havasu yet but a safe guess is 75-76mph with a stock 502mpi. Will run 69mph GPS on Powell.
If you see a SCS for sale buy it.

#183 My buddy with the procharger is running a regular 454, not a MAG.

If the Scarab in the original post is running the same motor it won't see 70 mph. If it is running the 454 mag it will be in the upper 60s for sure.

I just sold my 1994 22' scarab in july of last year. I had it for 5 1/2 years and it was a great boat. It had the 350 mag in it and ran 55-59 all day long. The 454 should run very close to 70 stock. I sold mine for $19,500 but it was the cleanest scarab on the market, looked brand new!! If the boat looks good and runs strong jump on it, you might want to throw an offer out there like $18,500 and see if he bites. The boat only books at 14,000 or so but condition means everything!!!

hEY GUYS I HAVE A BOAT OF SIMIALR SIZE BUT I THIN K IT MAY WEIGH LESS. I HAVE A 22 FOOT HAMOND THATS GETTING A REPOWER. ALL OF YOUR TALK ABOUT THE SPEED OF THE SIMILAR SIZED SCARAB HAS PEAKED MY INTEREST. WHEN I AM DONE I SHOULD BE PUSHING ABOUT 315 PROP SHAFT HP. MY BOAT SHOULD WEIGH RIGHT AROUND 2800 LBS WHEN I AM FINISHED MIN US PERSON AND GEAR. I AM HOPING FOR SPEEDS IN THE MID 60S AT SEA LEVEL BUT I AM NOT SURE. I THINK IT SHOUL AT LEAST SEE THE LOW 60S BUT ILL KEEP ALL OF YOU POSTED ON HOW IT GOES. DOES ANYOEN KNOW WHAT THE 22 FOOT SCARAB WEIGHS.

Nitro/Max, It is all white. used to have orange scarab decals on sides and across bow, till his wife ran the side down a set of break water tires at Powell. He took all of them off after that.
He just sold it for 28k.

My boat is real similar to yours except it is a 21 & sounds almost exactly what mine is doing at the same speed. I haven't had it out much yet but dropping the tabs slightly shaves off 1-2 MPH & I need to play with that some more to feel if it tightens mine up.I also know I have a 1/4 inch slop in the steering cable that needs attention & haven't figured out what to do about that yet.
If you find something that helps the handling let me know.

I have a 85 scarab 1 with a 502 mpi mag - gps clocked it at 74.8 - but the boat is real loose at that point. If anybody has any ideas please post. I do have IMCO external steering kit and it helped a lot. Wellcraft said the boat weighs 3800 with a small block. I'm not sure how much more with the BB and Bravo 1. I'm thinking about adding trim tabs (Lenco 12x12). Any thoughts (good or bad) or other options ? Thanks!

supersoaker466, I bet with the BBC your now at 4000 LBS. I have the Lenco 12 X 12 racing tabs & really like them, but they will shave of around 1-3 MPH. What prop do you have?

gnarley, I'm running a bravo 1 24p I don't mind losing 1 or 2 mph if the boat will handle better. I also need to try a 3 blade prop 26p to lower rpms and lessen the stern lift. I'm tacking 5400 hitting the rev limiter. Thanks for the info on the tabs. Any other info or suggestions on tabs or props would be greatly appreciated

the rev limiter is killing me top end speed. i also use a 26p 4 blade that pushes the boat at 72.2 mph hitting the rev limiter.
any help on the rev limiter would be great.

I have a 96 22 Scarab. It originally come with a 7.4LX MPI which is a fuel injected 330hp engine. Merc. only made this engine a couple of years. Its a great engine. The boat ran 66-69gps with 2 people and gear etc. 70.5 gps running light. Installed a 99 502MPI last year, now run 73-74 GPS with full fuel, coolers, and 2 guys. Have yet to run it light with good water. Should hit 75-76. For you guys having chine walking problems, I would change props. I've tried lots. The 25 p Mirage Plus labbed seems to work best on my boat. You don't want a stern lifting prop. Those will get you squirly. MrScarabRacer.... You are cookin! Do you know if your X dimention might be raised a little? That's fast for a 22! Supersoaker466, I have the dual Drew Marine " Sidewinders" on mine and she runs straight. Also retorque the nuts on the u-bolt that tightens the steering swivel shaft. It's located on the Gimbal housing above the drive. And yes, buy that Scarab, these are a blast to drive!

this is the deal, I have owned my 1995 22 scarab for about 7 years it had a 454 bravo 1, I have a GPS speedo in the boat. with the stock motor & a slightly tweaked mirage 23 the best I saw was 66 mph & a consistant 63-65. with 600 hp the boat ran 79 mph @ 5900. with a mirage 3 blade prop It is not loose at all, It also handled good with a hydromotive 4 blade just not as fast. I do not like the performance with a bravo 4 blade. they are very good handling boats overall. If you want a little more performance install a thunderbolt 4 ingnition this eliminates the rev limiter so you can run it to any rpm you desire. Im still waiting to see how it runs with the newly installed 720 HP motor.

The 22 will and can run 70. I had a 19 ft...the little sister to the 22' and I ran 55 consistantly with a 4.3L Vortec V6. I had 2 friends with the 22's and they both ran 69 to 72 MPH consistantly. Scarab really had a great hull for both boats. My little 19 ft took 2-3 foot chop like nothing...............................If you dont believ it, ask another Scarab owner. Wellcraft hit a homerun with those hulls in 96 thru 98.

install a merc thunderbolt IV ignition box this will eliminate the rev limiter all together.
