I used to go to the 101 drive-in in Ventura until it closed around 8 years ago. Back the truck up, set up the lawnchairs, grab a blanket and you're good to go;)

NorCal Gameshow,
Closing? Are they closing down the one in RC? We go to that all the time in the summer. Can't see it closing down because they are always packed at all 6 screens:confused:

from what i hear there's plans to put in a cineplex and shopping
article:
Opened in 1972 by the Syufy Corp (now Century Theatres) as a five-screener, a sixth screen was added in the early 1980's.
In a town that once boasted over thirteen drive-ins, the Sacramento 6 is the last remaining operating drive-in in Sacramento (with the exception of the Sunrise DI, which has opened and closed sporatically over the last ten years).
Much to the dismay of California drive-in enthusiasts, Century Theatres has announced that they will be closing all of their drive-in operations over the next few years. Unfortunately, the Sacramento 6 is at the top of that list.
Century Theatres has announced plans for the current site to be completely redeveloped into (guess what) a retail shopping center and multiplex, of which Sacramento apparantly doesn't have enough of already.
Sadly, this theater, like many Century outdoor operations, has been allowed to rapidly decline in appearance and upkeep over the last several years. Even recorded announcements of titles and showtimes have been nearly impossible to get.
I encourage all Sacramento residents to vist this DI while they still can. The new shopping center and multiplex are scheduled to open Fall 2004.

That figures:mad: Like there ain't enough shopping centers in Sacramento already:rolleyes: If the are opening up a new shopping center there in the Fall of 2004, my guess would be that the drive-in is probably shut down now:frown:
That news story was absolutely correct, that place is a dump. Still a fun place to take the family to, as long as you don't use their non-working restrooms and you escort your kids to the snack bar (Too many gang members there).
Oh well, at least all of my kids had the opportunity to go to a drive-in.

WOW, what timing - I was just asking a friend of mine the other day about the old speakers, wanted one for my pool room but I have no idea about where to find them?
I loved the drive in, used to go to the one in Yuma on 4th Avenue and then go 4Wheelin after the show! Last show I saw at the drive in was "The Outsiders", cant even remember what year. :)
Great memories. Im glad they're closed, I have a teenager daughter. :)

The one in Concord? Solano I & II? Might be. Was there the last time I was there but believe it or not, I was NEVER at that drive in as a kid. Watched alot of it over the fence, but never really there.

Yep, that's the one. Pretty sure it still shows movies. I do know it has a pretty low-life looking swapmeet on weekends.:)

The drive-in that was where the Anaheim Arena now sits was my last time at a drive-in, about 1990. I think there are more drive-ins in the eastern US.

Where i live now we have a 4 plex drive in with the FM radio sound, but i used to go to Pickwick drive in Burbank, still have one of those speaker boxes that you'd hang on the window, got it the last night the drive in was open, lotsa great memories from that place, went to Van Nuys Drive in and Victory Dr. In, also the Winnetka, the San Val, there were so many of them when i was growing up in the San Fernando Valley, lots of fun all of them!

If anyone is looking for old drive-in speakers, there are a bunch on Ebay. Just do a search for Drive-in speakers and you'll get a bunch of hits. Looks like they go from $10.00 to $35.00 each. Here's one of the auctions for an example http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2233590718&category=418
Saw some on Ebay also from the Santee, CA drive-in. All original stuff. There's also a few sets with 2 speakers and the pole......Way cool!

The last time I was going to drive-in's was when we used to take the kids to the Fiesta in Whittier (Pico Rivera). We used to love picking up a box of cheeseburgers from Tommy's on the way in. It's gone now.

How bizarre you started this thread......just a couple days ago I was thinking about drive-in theaters and wondered if there were any around anymore. That was the funnest......used to go to Simi, Ventura or the one in the valley. I'm assuming that none of them are open anymore? Feeling young again and was wanting re-live the good ol days!!! :D

As a kid there was one across the field from my Grandmothers house ..we would sit on the Roof and watch...no sound , But at Times WOW the sights we got to see (.) (.) :D
Went to an outdoor theater in Wimberly Tx. up by Austin a few years back . 2 barns across from each other about 50 yards.. one had the projecter and Snackbar , the other one had the wall painted white for the screen..brought your own chairs and sat on the ground between them ...it was different and kinda neat:)
