I was looking at a used boat with an HP500. I called the MFG of the boat to ask a couple of questions regarding the boat. The dealer asked how hours were on the motor and they told me that the HP 500 was good for like 300 hours before needing a rebuild???Has anyone ever heard of that ?

I have 260 hrs on mine and it's showing no signs of slowing down, However you have to be very anal about the maintainance, engine service every 30-40 hrs and drive every 50hrs. I may optimistic in saying it should hold out for another 250-300hrs before the rebuild!!!

The Valve Springs should be replaced around 150-175 hrs. I have had many HP500's come in with a few broken valve springs at 200 hrs because they didnt turn the RPM they used too. I have also seen people run them over 300 hrs without doing anything but oil changes. The valve spring change is pretty cheap compared to dropping a valve down on a piston. IMO, they are the most Bullet Proof production motor you can buy:D

Do you recomend different valve springs if you install a whipple or vortech?

I charge for time and materials. That seems like an OK quote. That figure would definately cover any exhaust gaskets or valve cover gaskets that needed to be replaced. It's a very delicate job to do with the motor in the boat, and the heads still in place. But its done all of the time by the better performance facilities. With regard to different springs: I would not change the stock ones, unless I was changing the camshaft profile, then the heads need to come off anyway. When the hours are up, I replace them with a crane spring set.

a friend of mine named Mark Graves has a 2002 Magic 28' Cat with over 650 hours on an HP500EFI without any problems. He
had a minor deal in the XR drive a year ago but other than oil
changes, it runs like crazy. Great engines. I agree with what
GT said--best engine available.

650 hrs! I would like to shake that engine builders hand. That is the kind of story I like to hear. The guy that owns that engine is probably very glad he bought it!:D

I was wondering the same thing.....650 hours and the boat is a 2002. That is 325 hours in a boat a year, I want his cash and his work schedule!!!

Maybe he transplanted the motor from a previous boat?

He don't have to work. I think if I were in his shoes I would have logged more. I put 155 hrs on my HP500 last year & live So. Cal. Would be nice to spend that much time on the water. Some day ?

You guys have all seen that Magic cat that Mark Graves owns.
It's yellow and red and orange and from one side to the other
it is backwards in the order that it fades. kind of strange looking
but he loves it! He boats everyday and usually has about 10 or 12 people on it. He's had as many as 18 on it and it still planed!
No he never left the key on either. the guy lives in the channel!
He still runs about 80 mph on the Gaffrig and it's an open bow too.

good god. 650 hours in 2 years!@!!!...
I only put 20 hours on mine last year. Boy did I get short-changed.....
at any rate if the maintenance is done you should be able to get way more than 300 hours on it. thats if the maintenance is done.;) ;)
low compression, roller cam!!.... it should last forever as long as you don't get any water in it or blow it up....

well in my defense thats 20 hrs of run time..... there is of course "parking time."
1 hour of run time for each 5 hours of parking, while drinking, partying, etc. etc. etc.
I will try harder next time...;)

650 hours plus is great for a motor....I know of a few people with 300+ hours on their 500EFI's and they still run like new.

hey anything involving the boat is "boating"
for example, say you drink too much and like a responsible boater pass out on the floor for 8 hours rather than driving home. That 8 hours is "boating time" IMO. :D
