I'm on a budget, so I use 3 Kirkland Marine batts.
2 for stereo and 1 in reserve.
3 amps - 2 jl 300/4 and 1 RF 5002 pushing 4- 6X9's 2- 8" coax 2- 6.5 coax and 1 12 in RF PUNCH 3 sub.
I've played up to 5 hrs straight at loudest setting and never gone dead.
I recharge everything at home after each weekend and top off before each trip.

red optima and no alternator;)
I know the alt drags some, have you run back to back with GPS or Radar to see any gain without the alt? I also assume you guys are running no more than a day without a charge?
Thx,

reid, if you need a system. i have a fat hookup. and you would run 2 bats to a perko switch. 1 for the boat, and 1 for the system

when I ran an HEI distributor i would lose 2 MPH when my alternator was not working or disconnected! I found this out by mistake!!! I now run a magneto and an alternator just to keep my battery charged.

Like mentioned. Use the Perco switch. 1 Battery for the starting on position #1. Remaining battery(s) on position #2 for system. Use position #2 when bumping, then when out cruising switch to "ALL" and charge away.
NEVER use your starting battery for system, unless you have cables.

I need to get the same issue dialed.
I'm in need of 2 new batts.
One died at the RYUB last weekend after a full charge and 15 minutes of stereo at the lake.
I was seriously thinking of the kerkland costco deep cycles. Hell if they crap out in a year I'll just take them back...costco takes everything back.
Or how about diehard deep cycles?
Walmart?

I havent gps'd it yet because I was too lazy to put the alternator when I rigged the boat :p Although I will check it with and without one this year. I had a friend that lost rpm and speed because his system had a voltage drop.I charge my battery after every use;) 460 jus getn it stopped running his because the belt kept comming off. One day the belt flew off and hit him in the back of the head.......LMFAO:D it was halarious;)

You can run a perco switch which is nice but if I was going to do it I would run an isolator. I run dual batteries in my lexus and denali. I had to upgrade because of the ammount of current I run. I have 4 tv's,5amps and 8 10's in my denali. I also have 4 tv's,4 12's, a 4 channel amp and a huge orion 2100hcca in my lexus. They both draw alot of current. I first ran 2 batteries and though it would be ok but NO! the second battery kept running down my main battery. So I installed a isolator and problem solved. The new isolators are pretty much a large switch that can consume large ammounts of power. They cut the connection between the 2 batteries once the ignition is turned off. When switched on it will allow for the alternator to keep the battery charged. This is what they look like. They are small and cheap and work well;) The 200amp one ruins about $80 and the smaller one runs about $30

optima blue tops here. 1 in the kachina and 2 in the nordic. for stereos its all about the reserve capacity. the 2 rockford amps in my nordic are pushin 1500 watts. i have never had a problem. my alternator puts out 100 amp.

What do the Nascar boys use for a battery?

One Orbital Blue top, 1000 watt stereo, 100 amp alternator.
One Orbital Red top for the motor.
Last pair lasted five years. No problems.
I can play long enough till it's time for a ride.
Fat alternator cables are just as important as fat battery and stereo cables.

Thx,
red optima, and yes, i've run back to back passes with the alternator installed and charging, and after removing the thing from the boat, with no other changes.

396 that would be me. i have retired the boat from racing now though. 2003 was my last year. i got 2nd place at the IHBA world finals in 2001. anyway, i take her to mostly saguaro lake and bartlet lake on weekdays now. she's just-a-cruzer for me now. i run my nordic at havasu, roosevelt and pleasant. occasionaly i will take either boat to san carlos depending upon the water level. back in the 90's i used to go to apache alot but i got tired of that dirt road.
it seems that you have 2 boats too. what lakes do you take your boats to?

We usually do saguaro every weekend. I have seen you out there before. Last year I left my boat home and there were about 6 jets running arount with roosters up late in the afternoon. I saw you but didnt get a chance to talk with you. That is one nice ass kachina you have and it runs fast. The boat I run is in my atavar. We will be out this year with about 10-15 other jets. We need to meet up and party;)

I run a large, ugly, Black plastic Marine Diehard. It powers only the starter and an MSD 7A. Music is supplied by Bassett, the standard of the industry. Volume is adjusted with my right foot..........according to my needs, or my mood. A simple deal. RR
