My rig is moving up to 103,000 miles and I've heard conflicting advice as to what is better to run in your car.
Any suggestions?
Sincerely Confused ~RK :D

Sythetic?
What is that?

I would put synthetic in it if you can afford it. You can go twice as long on an oil change, it protects better against heat, and it's a lot better during cold starts since it flows better. Of course any oil will work as long as you change your oil and filter religiously. If you have a habit of going over, use synthetic.

One more thing. Don't buy anything claiming to be"for older engines". It's just oil with additives that thicken it so your heap won't blow smoke anymore!:D

Synthetic is a no no in high mileage engines and you'll probably have oil leaks if you use it. Go with Valvoline Max Life or another quality higher mileage oil. I have had good results with max life. Or just use coventional if you prefer. I'd also reccomend a quality oil filter such as Wix or NAPA. Fram sucks.

sold my 88 k-5 blazer to my friend w/ 201,000 miles. All i ever ran was mobil one. now it's got 250,000 and still running strong on original motor. Mobil 1 is the best stuff i have seen. Not to mention it is all Porsche recommends for their cars.

I agree, Mobil one is excellent! The official oil of NASCAR for what it's worth.:)

The trouble with going to synthetic on a higher mileage motor i that Synthetic is consideably "Slicker" and will slide past seals much easier. If your motor was even close to leaking oil w/ conventional oil, it WILL leak w/ synthetic. I would stick w/ regular dino oil, and a good filter.

as an amsoil dealer i'm a bit biased. i would use synthetic. as far as synthetic making your motor leak since it's a high mileage motor is a myth. if it's not leaking now, amsoil will not make it leak. like highroller said, if you have a habit of running your oil longer than a few thousand miles, you should switch to a synthetic. amsoil has oils that are guaranteed for 25,000 to 35,000 miles (or 12 months). the only catch is you have to change your oil filter at 12500 miles or 6 months. they also have tranny fluid, diff. fluid, wheel bearing grease, etc etc.

Rk, I agree with everyone else about synthetic oil but I don't think it is right for your higher mileage rig. Go with the Valvoline max life.... :D v-drive

Add BG MOA with every oil change.

Why Don’t Automakers Use Synthetics in Production Vehicles:
Okay. Synthetics are great. The real question is: Why doesn’t everybody use them? Automakers don’t use synthetics in production vehicles (except as where needed to prevent component failure during the warranty period) for at least two reasons. They want to sell you a new car more often, and synthetic motor oil would significantly reduce their chances of doing that. Additionally, it is our opinion, that the oil companies want to sell oil to keep their wells and refineries running and they do that by recommending the 3000 mile oil change. Sure, they all offer a synthetic or semi-synthetic now, but it is only a very small percentage of total oil sales vol

it is a proven fact that even the non-synthetic oils can run a bit more than 3000 miles, but like has already been stated, the major oil companies will not promote that. it would cut BILLIONS of $$$ from their bottom line. europe has been running non-synthetics for more than 3000 miles per oil change for years. there are several automakers that are using synthetics in there cars now. slowly but surely they are "seeing the light". i run synthetics in everything from my weed wacker to my boat. v-drive, i'm assuming by your smilie at the end of your post you're kidding right. the max life oil from valvoline is a full synthetic.

Come on RK, trade in that old Pinto wagon and get something better...we know you never actually change the oil. Just adding a quart every other week doesn't count.!!!!! :D :D
127,000 on his F-250 pickup on Pennzoil 10-40 plain jane dinosaur oil, changed every 4000-5000 miles. Runs great.
I use Mobil One in the boat though since it revs a lot higher and is under a significant load a lot of the time......
Which would you rather have for a diamond ring? Regular or synthetic??? :D :D :D

I have run synthetic oil in every vehicle I've owned since the 1980's. High mileage leaking, as stated earlier, is a myth. I used to you Amsoil which in my opinion is the best but now use Mobil 1 since it's easier to get. No petroleum based oil can compete for the protection or longevity a 100% synthetic oil can provide. Don't worry about how many miles you have on the vehicle.

Essex502 is right. I switched my old 1971 Chevy C-10 to Mobile One 32 years after it was manufactured and I still don't have any leaks. Yes, it is the original un-rebuilt motor.

Mobil 1 is what I use in my cars and I have used it in my boat(s) too. It is all I use. It has much better flow characteristics and it doesn't cause sludge to form in your engine like regular oil. Much slicker than petroleum as well. I'd give it three snaps in a circle!!!:D
