lifter, valve, valve seat, spring, rocker hitting something....

yes I have a breather on the front, thou the noise seemed to come from the rear of the cover, I haven't had a chance to take the cover off to take a look see. the noise went away so I was leaning towards a sticky lifter.

Or "cheapo" lifters, bad clearance when the oil gets hot and thins out it clatters, back off and the oil cools and thickens it goes a way, got one like that in my dually!..

I thought maybe it might be one of those rockers backed off.

bought the boat last summer. It's a 1978 hawaiian, 460 ford the guy I bought it from said it's stock except for the preformer intake, he owned it for 15 years and only used it once a year, and not every year, said he had never been in it (the motor). ran great all summer ,just rebuilt the pump (myself) runs even better, except for this phantom tic.

Well if he never ran it hardly, good chance the oil was never changed it could very well be a sticky a lifter, try running a can of CD2 lifter shit in it, then put a fresh batch of oil in it!. That stuff works pretty good for that, might be worth a try!..
