Apparently the 454 is hard to find or no longer available. Most of the manufactures say the 6.0 liter Marine Power MPI is the replacement for the 454. They say it puts out 375 hp and is lighter.
I found a web site that confirms the hp, however I'm concerned about putting a small block in my new jet.
I'm looking to get a 21 ft open bow jet and want to reach 60 mph.
Does anyone have any info on this engine?
P.S. they do offer several upgrade options in a big block, but I'm trying to save money if possible.
Thanks
J

I`m not a pro but I alway hear small blocks are for 17' and smaller. the HP sounds like it should work but I think you should go for 100 more hp for the speed your looking for. I have a rebuilt 427 BBC in a 19'er I couldn`t be happier. picked it up for 3500$. Cheers and good luck. Your best advice would come from GS Marine in Corona Ask for Greg. They built and installed mine.:D http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/500/1425Picture_003-med.jpg

This has been beat to death in the jet heads forum.
I think most agree that a small block is a great power-to-weight ratio up to 500HP or so. After that, it takes boost (and all the expenses that go with it) to make up for the lack of cubes vs a big block.
So I guess it depends on what you want to do with it down the road.

actually the 496(injected) replaced the 502(425?HP)carbed. they still make a killer 502 carb dealeo but it just over 500hp. i'm pretty sure they make two differerent motors at 496 cubes. oh, when i said they i ment MarinePower- i have had enough coffee yet

For a Jet, the small block is going to be soooooo underpowered you will be disappointed. THe 496 was a replacement for both the 502 and the 454 which is why there is a 385 pony version and a 425 HP version. Don't make the mistake of the small block with a jet, you will be unhappy and most likely stuck with it.:(

My 383 SBC makes over 450 HP and over 460 ft-lbs of torque (which is more power than all those BBC options you mentioned), costs less, and weighs about 200 lbs less than the 502 or 496.

Sorry for bringing up a topic that has been beat death.
Looks I'm going big block. I'm even thinking about going real big now.
For about 6,000 over original quote I can go with the 502X which has about 500 hp.
I figure that should be enough cubic inches, huh.
Plus it's a pretty motor. It will be on display when not in use.
Thanks for the advice.

I would tend to agree with the small block comments. But in connection with outdrives. Jets need HP and Torque for a 21 footer to get close to 60. The 496 would get you close.
