Tell me about Sunny? At Prime Marine there is the same picture. How fast was this Cole? Did it run Nitro / Fuel. Is he still around? This picture is so cool!!

Long Long history. He did drive the fuel boat "smoke on the water" and others but his first love was Blown alcohol flat. I thin he went 160 and then there was an "unoffiicaL 166" once. I will try to dig up his biography.

He was liscenced to drive every class of boats there was. As I remember he was the only one to have a lisence like that.
He raced the boat "Black Power" which was a TR1 blown gas flat and set a record with that back in the day. Oakland I think it was. Spit out, crashed, drug through the wing at Phoenix and busted up many times. Poorest loser I ever saw. Especially if he lost to Marvin Savage. You didn't want to go around him for weeks after that happened. Joker, prankster he was.
He lived to race alcohol flat. Everything else was just waiting. He drove until he couldn't. He idled through that pass and we all knew it was over. That was at Puddingstone and he was gone a few weeks later.
His son Greg Jones now has an alcohol flat called "Back In Black" and has the number O35. Greg also owns the original Tasmanian Devil boat of Robert Jordan sitting in his garage.

This picture is so cool!!Right after I painted this boat for Clive Hughes I had Sonny autograph this same shot but a bigger version. He always wore a top hat and in his autograph he incorporates the hat in his signature. Pretty cool to have the pic seeing as he was one of the top drivers in his era.

[Backseat Driver]

Sunny was a friend and great racer. When he wasn't racing you could often find him at Lake Lahontan, Nv. playing with his flat bottom boat. Sunny rigged my flat in 1985, it worked great. One day I went to his shop said he had a cold. Two weeks later I asked him when his cold was going away. He said it wasn't he had 6 months to live. Lung cancer. He is missed by all who knew and raced with him. Boats were his world.
