The bravo 1 is for motors up to 350hp, the x drives have hardened goodies thus cost more and the XR has straight cut gears hardened shafts, ect.
you can see exactly what is in the drives at mercruisers site.
I have been doing alot of research becuase i am tired of breaking bravo 1's
I am sure others on this site can be more specific.

Are you sure that the bravo is only good for 350 hp, I hope not, if so I have been living on borrowed time for three years.
510 horse bbc not giving up the power, what drive will hold?

I had the same response. Merc currently puts the B-1 behind their 496 (375 hp). I had one behind my previous 454 Mag (385 hp). I think the 350 hp cut-off is low.

Are the props interchangeable between the XR & the Bravo 1?

the current bravo 1 is rated up to 425 hp. there are 4 different models of the bravo one. the standard, the b 1 x, the b 1xz, and the b 1 xr. the standard has an updated gearset which has thicker gear floors and modified cone clutch. The "x" drive has the heavy duty u-joint assembly and input yoke. The "xz" has all the above plus the heavy duty propshaft. The "xr" has all the above also except it has the straight cut gearset in the upper.
