Boat stereo is old needs to be replaced. What should I install?
AM FM CD stereo with CD changer, or MP3 player.
I here MP3 players are becoming out dated. Just like everything
else.
All wiring and amps are in place, I just need to replace the deck.
Pacific stereo says go with the MP3 player?

Get a cd player that can play MP3 format on the CD's......I don't think they are going out....The MP3 format will be around for sometime...

My stereo also plays MP3's and It works great. I burn a hundred or so songs on a disk, and I have music for the whole weekend, without going the XM route.

It works well to go the MP3 route but I am a die hard supporter of XM radio.
If you go XM you wont regret it. I reccomend an in dash that plays mp3 cds and has an xm reciever.

I agree with boozer. I went mp3 with xm. It sounds great when you get the boats you tie up with (or park next to in the channel) to tune in the same XM channel.

The MP3 Decks are the way to go. It will never skip. Many decks now have WMA ablity which will let you put up to 300 songs on one disk! I can regularly fit 175 songs on a disk. I have a Pioneer Head Unit which I love. It gives me a ton of control over my High and Low Pass. I got mine through Ike Sound (http://www.ikesound.com/)

This unit is the 2004 version of the one I have http://www.ikesound.com/images/ebay/Pioneer_1986.jpg
Unit sells for $215 (http://www.ikesound.com/product-product_id/1986)

I'm new to this.
So I can burn hundreds of songs on one MP3 disk
with my home computer CD burner?

This is what I did last year and I would recommend it to everyone doing a stereo system:
*Installed a Sony head unit that is a cd player, cd changer controller, and is an XM receiver.
*Installed a Sony CD/MP3 10 disc changer.
*Also installed subs and 6 1/2's.
The mp3 disc's will hold approximately 170 songs per data disc. I have the following in my changer (of which I never touch):
Disc #1 = Country
Disc #2 = Classic Rock
Disc #3 = 80's
Disc #4 = Disco
Disc #5 = Heavy Metal
Disc #6 = Alternative (90's grundge)
Disc #7 = Glam Rock
Each disc has about 150 songs on each disc (that's over 1000 songs). YES, it took a very long time to generate these discs.
I have the ability to "shuffle" each album on each disc, each disc, or the entire collection, including the cd in the head unit.
I ran out of music from my library and everything I have downloaded. I am going to add more someday but when I hit the shuffle button, it's pretty sweet. I don't have to change cd's or changer cartridges is I want classics or disco, etc.

You need to make copies of the Glam Rock CD!!!:D 80's hair bands are going to make a come back check out that band The Darkness

BTW, I only spent $140 on the head unit, $160 on the changer, and whatever is becoming outdated....I'll just put on a cd and play it in the head unit. It'll still be cheaper in the long run. All in all for my entire system, I paid about $1000 and it's louder than hell for me and my family.:D

Coach, I just read about them in the OC Register, playing locally or something.
Kind of like AC/DC or 70's rock sound???

I have a cd player with xm and mp3 and I use the xm most of the time. I can switch the xm from my truck to the boat. plus the xm does not skip.

Waldo

Last thing before I leave work...
With XM and MP3's, your music won't skip when running over choppy water. The MP3 load into a memory and then plays unlike a cd where is uses a laser to play. Very nice when driving the boat.

Ok how do you burn a MP3 disk? On a normal CD burner?
So do I go to the store and just pick up MP3's and burn em?

Yes. It's just a data CD that contains MP3 files.
Coach, that's the exact head unit I have on order to replace my two year old Primier unit. How much anti-shock does it have when playing regular CDs?
LOVE The Darkness. Great album. Black Shucks! Those dogs don't give a ****!
... my throat hurts just typing that. :D
Check out Jet - Cold Hard Bitch. http://www.***boat.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif

Hardcore, when I copied my cd's to my hard drive I used Musicmatch.
It's free I think. Just recorded the cd to mp3 format. It doesn't take too long and you can always change the format after that.

I hadn't heard it until I picked up the CD. I miss listening to the radio because I get a little stale but I don't miss that nearly identical play list every morning for weeks at a time.

TB-
I have not tried to play a regular CD in the boat. Every boat I have ever been on with a regular CD player has skipped, so I always use MP3 files. Plus I can play a ton of music with the MP3 vs a CD

MP3's are nice but they have less quality than the original .dat source.
Go with XM.
MP3's are great if you already have a library of music you want to bring with.

Tom Brown

A good quality MP3 rip is easily good enough for car audio satellites and subs. Don't judge MP3s by the quality of the average song available on KaZzAa. Rip the tracks directly from the CD with a good quality variable bit rate ripper and enjoy.
By the way, XM radio uses lossy compression too.

i just bought the pioneer deck that Coach posted. it is the DEH-P4600MP. i bought it from Ike Sound off ebay for $129. It plays MP3/s, WMA's, is XM ready, and installed in about 1/2 hour. worked great in the boat. i burned a mixed mp3 disc with 122 songs on it and will make a ton more. i like waldo's take on it. that is a ton of music.........but i aint got that kind-a cake right now.. you dig?

HCS
04-23-2004, 01:56 PM
So I need- CD, MP3, WMA's, with XM capability+changer so the music loads into memory, that way it won't skip on coppy water.
Correct?

HCS
04-23-2004, 10:18 PM
Correct? I need an answer before I buy.
This is no joke, were talking money here. :D

hardcore- you need a deck that plays mp3's, cd's, and wma's....just like i showed you i got. you COULD also get a disc changer like waldo has. that just increases the number of discs you load onto your boat. keep in mind that you can burn a mp3 disc with over 100 songs on it. so if you burn 3 or 4 discs, you have 300 or 400 songs. a 100 song disc is a couple hours of music. so, it comes down to how much music you want to have on your boat!

DITTO ! if the MP3 has a bitrate of at least 128 (256 prefered)
will sound just as good as the original, not only to your ears but on a scope (spectrum ) .
anything less than 128 and there will be a noticable loss in the mid to upper frequency ranges.
By the way ,
the local Wally Worlds here have a 10 disk CD/MP3 changer on sale for arround 100 bones.
