California man seriously injured in boating mishap
By MICA THOMAS MULLOY
BULLHEAD CITY -- The first major boating accident of the year injured four people, one critically, when a boat slammed into the water and broke apart Sunday afternoon.
At about 5:30 p.m. a jet boat driven by Jose Garcia, 33, with three passengers from Lake Elsinore, Calif., was accelerating out of a no-wake zone near the Golden Nugget, according to a police release.
Witnesses told police the boat may have been traveling up to 45 mph when it hit the wake from another boat.
"Apparently, they had been jumping wakes out there from other boats," said Larry Tunforss, Bullhead City Fire Department public information officer.
"And they jumped a wake from a boat and when they came down in the water their boat came apart," Tunforss said.
The occupants were all thrown into the river and a water taxi took the people to the River Queen dock, Tunforss said.
The fire department sent four ambulances to the scene and took all four people to Western Arizona Regional Medical Center.
Garcia sustained serious injuries and was later flown to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, where he is in critical condition in the trauma intensive care unit, said UMC spokeswoman Cheryl Persinger.
The boat's passengers, Margie Garcia, Richard Swenson and Nickie Swenson, were all treated and released, said WARMC spokeswoman Ruth Padilla.
Tunforss said the fire department's dive team helped to pull parts of the broken boats from the water.
Bullhead City police public information officer Carrie Conner said police are trying to arrange for the use of the Department of Public Safety helicopter to locate the remains of the boat.

I can assure you it dosen't take a helicopter to locate the remains of a boat in the river!!!!
That's what "Side Scan Sonar" is for.
The department policies never fail to amaze me.
Next thing ya know, they'll be flyin in Sky Cranes from Canada to lift sunk boats outta the river:confused:
After all it's only taxpayers money.

Sounds like a PWC owner that tried to step up. It's too choppy for me (not to mention the PWC infestation) up at the casinos.
Hard way to learn a lesson......

I wonder if Jose had insurance and ever took a boating safety course ? or better yet ever took his passengers ..or the condition of his vessel into consideration......

Jose has probably already contacted a lawyer to see who he can sue. It's not like it was HIS fault it happened........

I wonder why OSHA was not involved in the design, & subsequent certifcation of Jose's boat. If it had been he would not have been able to accelarate past 5MPH, or been able to take passengers with him.
He also would have had an air bag safety type device, with an ejection seat complete with a parachute, plus back-up air supply, with training wheels on the side!:D

People jump jetboats on purpose? Good lord, that hurts like a mofo! If my boat gets out of the water, it's because I ****ed up and didn't steer over a wave.

I kinda hope he doesn't have insurance. This way our rates don't go up because he was a ass. If he does then the insurance company foot's the bill because he is a dumbass....

You guys crack me up.
Who has not went out wake jumping in a boat before?
I started that when I was about 12 beating the rivets out of my dad's alum fishing boat with a 20hp Merc. That progressed to running off the side of the ski jump. By the end of that summer I was not the only kid launching off the end of the ski jump. :D
I've cracked up a few flatbottoms too.
I've toned it back these days but I've distroyed my share of boats.
The schiada is 1 1/2 inchs thick in the keel so it should hold up to my abuse.
So you guys all talk your talk now and we'll see if you lift or launch off the next wake you come across.
Have a nice day :)

Anyone know what kind of jet boat? I'm thinking one of those Sea Doo or Yamaha so called boats not a perfromance boat.

I know I have jumped my offshore boat when I had that , but as for my smaller boats, I'd never do it. They are too unpredictable and jar you too much... (too shallow Vee).

I'd have to have a death wish to wake jump in my boat. Let's see someone in a flat jump. Kidney belt and back brace optional!:D

prolly running at 115 mph + here

I know those are all race boats but you get the idea.
If you have a mean flat with lots of oats between the stringers you don't even need a wake at all. Just let off the plate a bit and blip the throttle and you can hop it so high the rudder is out of the water. fun fun

NOT THE SAME... in each of those pictures a control surfact is still in teh water ... its a natural characteristic of these boat to perform in that manner....

Have a nice day :) I’ve jumped a wake or two in my boat. It’s a hell of a lot of fun. But I have never done it with passengers and my hull is pretty sound. I check the condition of the boat quite regularly.
I’m thinking that his boat was old and needed some repair.
PS can I have a ride in the Schiada when its done?

You can drive it. And feel free to hop a few waves. :)
I hear what you guys are sayin but I still say most of the people here have hopped a wake or 2 with someone else in the boat.
Sure, I bet the guy was being reckless and I'm not sayin that's ok. But I'm not sayin that I wish he got killed like some others here have.

Now that we know he is a dipshit, lets speculate on what kind of a boat it was.....

I've owned several Sea Doo Jet boats and they jump wakes easy.
The early twin engine 18 footers were perfect, pretty safe stable jumpers. The later single Merc powered 18 footer Sea Doo's have an entirely different hull bottom, and are easy to flip.
I've owned both models, and the later Merc powered ones are really squirrly, and will nose dive straight back down into the water if you get it high enough.
Boatcop spotted me jumping and doing 360 degree, 60 mph spins sometime back and warned me.
I did one more spin a day later and even though I've done hundreds of them along the river and off the coast of Avalon,, it got away from me and I ended up on the beach at Riverlodge, thankfully no one hurt. Could have been a big tragedy.
A group of drunk campers applauded like I meant to do it,, then helped me get the boat back into the water.
That was the last time I jumped or spun my Sea Doo boat.
