I am still looking at the 76 Scarab I posted about recently. I am still undecided about it , but I do know all that there is about the boat before I turn it down or go for it.
The latest question is this. I have been told that the 280 was a trs drive made by Volvo. Well this boat has 280 on the rear of the drive, BUT says Mercruiser on the side of it ? Is this something different ? The guy who owns it said that the previous owner has redone the whole transom to run different drives. I have no idea if he is b.s.ing me or what.
Also, would a 21 pitch stainless prop be a wise choice for a 7,800 lb boat with twin 350's ? I would imagine it would have to do with the hp.
One last thing, is it a good idea to run a solid lifter in a boat ? He says the 350's are running solid lifters. I haven't asked too much more on the engines yet.
Thanks for bearing with me on this decision I am trying to make, Dan

that is a 280 trs drive from merc. they made these in '75 and '76. they were mated to the 280 hp smallblock.

Finally someone with an answer I can understand.
Are these hard to find parts for? I am thinking that I will pass this boat up. I know that for a 30 ft boat 10g's aint much, but I also know how quickly 10 can turn into 15-20.

Suggest you get on Merc's website and look under the performance parts section. See what is available for that drive particularly props. I have heard that Konrad (sp?) makes a direct replacement for the TRS, but not sure about the 280 TRS. Does the 280 TRS have a tranny? If you are interested in this boat, I would suggest you pay for a detailed survey.

some of the parts are actually still available through merc. Otherwise, there are plenty of marine places that have old trs stuff lying around. Alot of people take them off and replace them with bravos. If one has the money, the easiest thing is to replace them with speedmasters(III,IV, or V).
