I am trying to figure out the desired quench area. Am I right in calculating the quench from the deck height and the head gasket compressed thickness. I have read that a desired quench is about .040". If I have a deck height of .020 and a gasket thickness of .039 my quench is .059 right? If that is right I should decrease my deck clr to 0. Is this a good thing to do?

Yes, you add the gasket thickness to the deck, zero deck and .040 gasket=.040 quench.

Steel rod deal you can get away with .040. Aluminum rod deals (or if you ever think you might) .055.

Is .040 the minimum or max I should strive for with steel rods? how important is the quench to maximizing the cylinder pressure and controling detonation?

.040 is a minimum but what I like in a steel rod motor. No less than .040.
If you have .059 deck and decrease it to a .040 deck height then you will pick up about .2 on compression on an example 454 Chevy. Just a ballpark.
As far as it is worth it, I don't know. Since I build for the most compression I can get, that's all I know.

Set the Trident engine up at .041" with a custom Cometic gasket .036" Left the piston .005" in the hole.
That way the block can be surfaced later on during overhaul. The standard Cometic .040" gasket will keep the quench the same.
Does it help? Cannot hurt.

Thanks fiat for the info. If I leave everything as is I have a .020 deck clearance and if I use a .039 gasket I will end up with .059 quench. I am thinking to have the block decked and take off about .010. The only thing missing from my puzzle is the cam. I am working on it.

There are a few fellows on here that can help you pick a cam but you will need some info.

In regards to the cam I have gotten alot of good advice from this board. I have also called three different cam grinders got three completely different cam specs. I am going to rely on the experience of some good engine builders and use what they know works.
