Who didn't see the giant plane that buzzed the channel today?? HOLY SHIT! I don't think it was a C130, but it was some sort of huge military cargo plane. It did a super low fly-by of the channel, did a 360 and started back for another pass when it headed south. I think we all thought it was going to go down in the channel?? It was a little scary. Everyone in the channel was staring and pointing and it got very quiet.
Anyone get a picture of it??

Here are some crappy pics and a video that was done on digital cam. Can someone post them so they come up on the thread.thx.
I am a pilot (non-military) and when a military person gets their pilot license they have a tradition of buzzing their hometown when they get the chance, kind of like a celebration that they accomplished a huge goal(it is). It is not supposed to be done but I think the brass may sometimes brush it under the carpet because it has been done by them and all the people before them.
I don't know if this was the case today, but that was unreal. Good for him if it was his celebration, maybe he was originally from here.
Sorry,no vid, its too large and I suck for shrinkin' it to fit.

Yep, them there aereoplanes is what the Air Force has had me fixin' fer the last 5 years. That are definately a C-17 Globemaster, Only countries that have them are us and the Brit's (they bought 7). We take them out to the Vegas area for training once in a while. And they have to get low level traiing somewhere.....
I can't tell from the pic's what base it's from. If anyone got a good pic of the "tailflash" (the colored stripe on the vertical stabilizer) I could tell who's it was.
Glad ya'all enjoyed the impromtue air show, that will be $5 per person who saw it, thankyou..... You can send me the money and I"ll make sure I get it to the right person  :p

Sorry Mike, but C-17's don't refuel other planes (That'd be a KC-135 or KC-10), and even if they did it's only done ABOVE 30,000 ft and on specific refuel tracks, so I doubt you'd see it "almost everyday". What you might be seeing is formation low level's or threat avoidance training.
Have a nice day

RRX.. Were the plane's motors prop driven or jet? Prop would be a C130. Jet may be a C141 or C17 or C5. Doubt it was a C5 though you would know it for sure, it is larger than a 747..

A C17 is a hopped up C 130. It can land on a dirt strip and the like. Just has more capacity than a 130. A C5 is for long hauls with large loads. Like crossing the pond. A 130 and 17 is more for intra theater airlift. C 130s have unique caps and the Air Force needed something that would do similar but carry more and be faster.

Though they do the same jobs, C-5 and C-17 are very different. These jets are the main transpo for the 4 services, so the more the merrier(my opinion). The C-5 is gettin old, and the 17 is taking it's place (eventually). Awesome shots of the plane doing a low altitude pass over the lake! I'll see if I can't get my crew to do the same thing someday...just don't let the commander find out! I like my job, almost as much as I like my boat.... :rollside:

You'd be absolutely amazed where you can land a C-17, anywhere you can land a C-130, and once ... ONCE ... they landed a 130 on an aircraft carrier (back in the '50's). They have the most kick-ass thrust reversers ever. I got to watch one taxi backwards on it's own, overseas, fully loaded w/ humanitarian relief suplies for Afghanistan, winter '01/'02. The way it shook was scarry.
The minimum runway spec for it is 3000' by 90' wide, loaded, pavement NOT required. Payload, 170,900 pounds maximum.

Our nickname for the C5 is "Aluminum Overcast". When that big sucker slowly flies over, the sun is blocked out for so long that the chickens go to roost, the cows head for the barn, and the temperature drops 5 degrees.
Bob Hope once commented on a short field landing in a C130 in Vietnam. The pilot pulled the props back into beta (reversed them) about 2 feet off the ground to plant it and get stopped. Hope said they hit so hard the next thing he knew his shorts were around his neck.

I was buying fuel at the marina when the plane came over. The wing tip was about 120' above the ground. A 'flyer' dropped out of it, and it read "Paris Hilton" has hi-jacked this plane! "We will fly over you until we find a REAL PARTY. If you cannot produce a REAL PARTY on our next 'go round', we will be forced to move on! They then went on to Parker, where the "party was in progress". Thank god for the AMERICAN AIR FORCE! They know how to party!

DOVER, Del. - A huge military cargo plane developed problems after takeoff and crashed attempting to return to Dover Air Force Base on Monday, breaking apart short of the runway, officials said. All 17 people aboard survived, though several were injured.
The C-5 Galaxy, the military's largest plane, broke in two just behind the cockpit, leaving the cockpit at a right angle to the fuselage. The tail assembly ended up several hundred yards from the plane, and one of the engines was thrown forward by the impact, but there was no evidence of fire.
Fourteen people from the plane were taken to Kent General Hospital in Dover, none with life threatening injuries, officials said. Three others were taken to Christiana Care in Newark, said hospital spokeswoman Sharon Justice.
The C-5 was being flown by a reserve crew from the 512th Airlift Wing, said Capt. John Sheets of the Air Mobility Command at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.
According to initial reports, the plane had just taken off and had some indications of a problem, said Col. Ellen Haddock, spokeswoman at the Pentagon's Joint Chiefs of Staff. It turned back to land and fell short of the runway, she said. It wasn't immediately clear if the plane was carrying cargo when it went down.
Emergency crews, some in hazardous materials suits, examined the wreckage Monday morning in light rain and under overcast skies.
Lisa Barrentine, who lives near the crash site, said she was in bed when she heard a rumbling.
"You could hear the windows shaking," Barrentine said. She said planes normally fly over her property, which lies at the southern end of the runway between the base and the Atlantic coast.
The C-5 Galaxy, made by Lockheed, is one of the largest aircraft in the world. It was first delivered to the military in 1970. Even with a payload of 263,200 pounds, the latest version can fly non-stop for 2,500 miles at jet speeds, according to Lockheed Martin Corp.
Dover is home to the 436th Airlift Wing, with more than 4,000 active-duty military and civilian employees, and operates the largest and busiest air freight terminal in the Defense Department. The base is also home to the Charles C. Carson Center for Mortuary Affairs, which processes bodies from the nation's wars.

It takes "power on" to make a turn like that. I knew it was a "fly by" because he kept it at the same precision 45 degree bank. I don't think the "Taliban Air Force" got to the part of their manuals, about "tuning a big plane". After the 'go 'round', the pilot then made more "military manuvers" down the lake. In China, Eastern Europe and the Middle East, the people on the ground would fire weapons at the plane, in Havasu, we just wave and 'flash' them.
