there is no number cast into the head above an exhaust port and just below the vc rail?

Blown, Thanks for your reply, These heads do not have any markings above the far right exhaust port like others. The intake valve measures a little over 2" intake around 1.5/8 or so. I found ths cast number under the exhaust port. Inside the oil gally I also found casting numbers 0E29 on one and 0E34 on the other. got any idea?
Thanks

Those heads are from a 86 or later truck engine. Could be the heads for the fuel injected 460 engine found in pick ups and Econoline vans. What are you going to use the heads for?

Those heads are supposed to be good but the exhaust will not bolt up to the older style headers, different bolt spacing.

If you are going to build a 540 get some eddies or blue thunders. You can have alum fixxed if you break it.

E6TE-DA heads are a lot like D3VE heads. They came on truck chassis in the '80's; E7TE heads are the fuel injection heads...
I don't think E6 heads are appropriate for a 540. The small intake port cross section will not provide sufficient breathability for the large displacement engine, and there are other factors in the overal head design too.
If you insist on oem iron castings, you'd be better off with max-ported D3VE castings, if you want to run pump gas. Some light machining will also be necessary on the valve train stand-offs, no big deal. D3VE's can now be made to flow on par with early-style (D0VE, etc.) castings and they have a bigger combustion chamber to accomodate the increased stroke of the 540.
D0VE heads can be an option too, with D-cupped pistons if you insist on pump gas.
D0OE-R casting would work great on a 540 mostly because of their huge intake ports, again D-cupped pistons to lower compression.
Ideally, Blown has the right idea for good breathing heads for a 540 that are bolt-on.
Incidentally, I think your particluar E6TE heads were cast in May of 1990...
