I have an 01 Ultra 247 with the HP500EFI and a newly added Whipple system. I am going to change out my factory plugs for next season and wanted to get some ideas of what works best from all the pros....
So lets hear it. Thanks, NB

Autolite is a good plug but difficult to read. I use NGK.

Being searious now...
Why is it difficult to read the plug on an Autolite vice NGK? Is it the ceramic you're referring to or electrode material?
I ask because I haven't ever used NGK and if there is an easier method to my madness then by all means I want to try the good stuff... :D

It is hard to see heat in the first two threads and if the timing "line" goes off the ground electrode it is hard to see. Also if you look for color on the flat at the end of the plug it is hard to see also.

No kidding....
I just might try those out for my own sake. Hmmm

Mercruiser uses NGK from the factory, and I swear by them. Stick with them.

I dont need to change due to the Whipple system? I thought (scary) that it might need something slightly different now. It will just be that much easier if they are the same.

as info said NGK plugs are easier to read the heat on the threads and strap. I switched from autolites years ago and never went back.

I used autolight 33's but they might be to cold for you.
Ok guys, don't just give the brand name. What about the heat range??????

My brand is NGK because the cad plating burns off very close to 1200 degrees. I also use an extended tip plug because if I "miss" the fuel curve a bit, it will flash the end of the ground strap before engine damage. B9ES for the alcohol stuff, 1 range hotter for blown gas stuff and nearly everything else (B8ES). B7's if I want to tune a blown gasser real quick.
Quickee blown gas tune up= B7's and lean it till you flash the ground strap off, fatten it 10 on the pill. Change to B8's and race. Old school. :p

Fiat, I've read alot of your posts, you sound real experienced with big hp engines. I just picked up a blown injected alky boat. Both injection and methonal I'm new at, if your wisdom comes at a fair price I wouldn't mind picking your brain some time.

But I do some things a lot different than others do and you'll have to do your homework to understand some things I do. You can email me but don't attatch anything as I don't open attatched mail unless I know you.

Ya know we pulled some NGK spark plugs out of my buddies cruiser (bike) and now I understand why those seem better than the autolites.
Correct me if I am wrong :D , but I was able to see where the discoloration in the zinc coating (chrome or SS look) was to determine whether he was too rich or even lean.
Plus I though with that amount of miles on them, they were in great shape.
Just my 0.02

I run a 502 with a Whipple 3300 SC in a Sanger DC. Contact Jon MacQuarre
at NGK Sparkplugs. He was very helpful. Just tell him the specs on your application, and he will reccomend a spark plug to "start with". jmacquarre@NGK sparkplugs.com
