Took the boat out today, new motor package BBC bored & stroked to a 496 whipple system on it.
Question, boat runs 70-80psi in the oil pressure, Ok or something that needs to be looked at.
Not sure when you get to much of a good thing.

at what RPMs do you see that pres.? at 7000 rpm thats a good thing. at 3000 rpm its too much.

What viscosity oil are you using & also is it reading from a mechanical or electric pressure gauge? I have seen considerable varitation in the electric pressure gauges.

I will have to check to see what the engine builder used for viscocity.
It is using an electric oil pressure gauge, Gaffrig.
I see 80 psi at 3k-4k RPM, at 4.5k its around 70psi at idle its 60-70psi.

If that is the oil temp when the engine is cool then I wouldn't think it is too far out of line. My engine will idle at 60PSI when cool/cold & jump to around 80 psi when up & running, then drop to 55 once the oil gets heated up. Once hot it has 35 or so at idle. I'm running 20-50 weight.
Does that sound similar to what you are seeing?

Check with the engine builder and use the exact brand and weight of oil he/she recommends. Also, be sure your oil temp is warmed up before running it hard.
While cold, mine runs at 90psi at idle and 100psi once on plane. After it warms up is runs at 80psi at idle and 90psi at 5300rpm. I run Torco Racing MPZ 50 wt oil, as per my engine builder.

What about 8 pounds at 700 rpm hot Valvoline Racing straight 60w? It goes to 40 pounds at speed.

First thing before panic, tee in a mechanical guage and see if it compares to the electrical one!. I don't care if GOD made the electrical guage it can be wrong, a lot of it can depend on the power source to the sending unit, if it don't have the required current going to it it will give a false reading!...Second a lot depends on what clearances are in the motor, also not all brands of oil are the same. I have tried different brands of oil same weight and got different pressure readings both at idle and WOT!..That has been discussed before so I will leave this alone and not start another war!..
