The gen 1 uses studs instead

actually... all alphas, and #1's had the grease fitting in the side for the gimble bearing. tge old 470 and so forths withthe sealed bearing didnt.they were early to mid 70's. the alpha gen 2 started transition in 91, and finished in 92. the gen 2 has a stainless pump housing, and a high volume pump. the std. alpha and earlier have a lower volume pump.gen 2 also have the oil res. on the engine (started in 92). also the gen 2 has a deeper upper case to allow the water to cool the back of the upper gear set. and yes, the gen 2 is through bolted together, not sudded like the std. alpha.
