WHAT YEAR AND MODELS FIT UNDER THE "GEN 4" BLOCKS
TRYING TO BUY PARTS AND NEED TO KNOW.

I think pre-1991 is Gen IV
91-96 is Gen V
post 96 is GenVI

I don't think there is a clean break between the 4 and 5. Friends has a Baja he bought new in 1992 and it had a Gen 4 502 bowtie block in it.

Craig, i think your friend might be wrong. I thought all 502's which began in marine applications in 1991 were gen five. I have never seen nor heard of a gen IV 502 BBC. Who knows i could be wrong.

I think mine is a IV but it is considered a V

Nope 502`s did come as gen 4 from mercruiser i have one sitting in my garage and they also had a bowtie block not a standard block. Bruce

Mine is a Bowtie. It was one of those Warranty deals.
Merc smacked the block the valve cover rails and the crank snout.
New crank block was OK and nice repairs to the heads.

How far can you safely bore the Bowtie block?
I have some alcohol pitting. It is only 4.5 now.
