View Full Version : Trailer wont back up.

I have an EXTREME trailer.
When I go to back up it locks the brakes and wont let me back up.
What the hell is this....

Do you have it wired correctly? You need the five wire hook-up that locks out the trailers surge brakes when you put it in reverse. On mine it takes the seven connector round, and converts it to a five flat. If you don't have that, my Extreme trailer came with a metal clip, that would attach to the tongue, and prevent the surge brakes from applying when going in reverse.

You need to wire the backup lights to the trailer- the electric solenoid will disengage the brakes.
If you can't do that right now, use the key. Stick it in the slot on the surge part of the tongue.

My Zieman is the same way. I hate that little key.:yuk:

Thanks guys , But i have no idea where that stuff is.
I have had the trailer for 5 seasons and it started doing it at the end of last season. it is progressively getting worse....

Kilrtoy, if you don't wire it up right, or don't have that gay little key, just get a 5/8 nut and put it in the slot for the sliding rod at the tongue. A couple of dimes stacked will work too. Duct tape it in while you back up, this'll keep the brakes from activating. Don't forget to take the nut out before you hit the road, otherwise, no trailer brakes

If it used to work, but now doesn't, check for corrosion on the contacts for the plug.

Thanks guys,
I just found these little two washers that are half cut, I think these are the keys you guys are referring too.
Thanks for everything.......

It sounds like you have an intermittent wiring problem with the connection that powers the solenoid valve that releases the pressure on the hydraulic braking system on your trailer when you back up.
This is normally energized by the back-up lights on the tow vehicle (blue wire on a five wire plug) and keeps the brakes from locking up when trying to back the trailer.
If you have a test light, check the system by connecting the boat to the trailer, set the emergency brake, put the vehicle in reverse and check to see if you have power from the plug to the trailer. You may also want to check to make sure both back-up lights on your tow rig are working, if not, start checking for a blown fuses.
Good luck my fellow Shockwave brother. :)

Floor it. Those brakes can only be so strong.

Do you have a five flat on the truck? Could just be the connection at the connector.
The keys will work for backing up but they seem to pop out when the pressure it released. I usually tape mine when backing up, then take it out again after. Let me know if you need a pic.

You can see where the tape pulled off the cheap Zieman paint job.. It was blue masking tape too. Oh well. its only money.

On the five flat pin connector you can see the blue wire is the farthest from the ground. If you can check it with a 12 V tester when your hottie wife is standing on the brake with the truck in reverse this should show hot.
Worst case you can wire it to the taillight wire, temporarily turn on your lights and it should make the trailer brakes quit working. Like an over ride off switch.

Check to see if your back up lights even come on when you put the truck in reverse. A misadjusted B/U light sw or blown fuse will keep the solenoid from coming on.

Kilrtoy -
We had the same problem with our Extreme trailer. There was an electrical problem that kept blowing fuses in the panel. Check your fuse panel (on your truck) and see if any have blown. To get it fixed, we had to get the electrical worked on at the swing-a-way tongue. I don't know if you have that option, but it seems to cause a problem with the wiring.
