Those of you with depth finders on your cat, do you have the transducer mounted in one of the sponsons, or in the center pod? I am going to install one, and don't know the best location for mounting.
Thanks

I would mount it at the back, your lowest hanging thingy is back there.........( . )( . )........Lowest part of the boat also :)

There are a few high end sounders that "ping"
through the hull.
Instead of having an external transducer , it has one that mounts to the inside of the hull.
cant remember the details tho .

I don't have an answer for you phebus, but I know they won't work through air so I'm pretty sure a tunnel mount will stop functioning when the tunnel raises out of the water. It will have to be in a position so the transducer has only fiberglass and water between it and the bottom.

My understanding was that pretty much any transducer can shoot through a hull but they lose about 30% efficiency if it isn't designed for it. Still, it's better than draging a beer can sized pick through the water.

Lowrance and hummingbird has in hull transducers they operate up to 70 mph with single skin hulls. Cored hulls need external transducers either through hull in the bottom or outside on the transom.

I plan on going with the Livorsi depth finder with the thru hull transducer, I just don't know the best place to mount the transducer. In the center pod or sponson.

I had one of those on my Eliminator, only good at idle speeds, as soon as the steps on the hull start to work, the depth finder stops working...

That's the unit I run. I'm pretty sure it's built by Teleflex. I like it fine and it works well at any speed my boat can go (to the low 70s). I'm pleased with it.
If I didn't need the white face, I'd go with the Lowrance 3500.

I had the teleflex. It will work great on boats without steps with the thru hull transducer. With the steps, its pretty much useless at speeds over 25 or so......

Thanks for the links Tom. Now, who knows if Carrera uses a solid lamination or is it cored? I guess before I mount it in the bilge, I'd better call them.

Hey... one thing I just remembered... I'm pretty sure the Livorsi unit is spec'ed to read to 200 feet. The Lowrance 3500 is spec'ed to read to 800 feet, as I recall.
That's not a big deal around here where pretty well all of the lakes are less than 90 feet deep but it may be of interest if you boat in deeper water.

Like you, I need the white face. For Powell, the Lowrance would be nice though.

Yeah, I think if you need the white faced model you're going to be stuck with a 200' max, like me. The only time I miss the extra range is when Spectras starts blabbing about how great his 800' Lowrance is. :D

Tom & Phebus , all the Lowrance 3500's come with both black and white face in the kit:p .They pop off easily to replace.Tom , I'm not sure about 800', who gives a fiddler's fart what's down that deep:D .My prop is only 3' down:p

Please don't tell me that. I just passed on the Lowrance because of color and bought another brand. It's not even here, yet. :(
Phebus, the Livorsi gauge may be white but it does not match the other Livorsi gauges. It looks OK next to them but only in a circular sort of way. When I bought a gauge for my first project, my brand loyalty in this matter was misguided.
By the way, Spectras... my prop is up a couple of inches from the bottom of the boat. :D

I'll go over to the Lowrance website and check them out.
Thanks

The Lowrance website states that their depth gauge includes round and square black snap-on bezels, but doesn't list white as an option. I will have to look into it.

I've also been told it no longer comes in white, phebus. Maybe the white option has been discontinued.
That makes sense since all I seem to see anymore are white gauges. :D

Hey , I'll go to the garage and check if I still have the white face;).My 20 spectra had black Medallion gauges and I used the black face. Like Tom said Lowrance may have discontinued them:rolleyes: Ps; Tom, cancel your order:D ,I have the white face still [ I must be a packrat:eek: ] you can have it if want it.

I'd mount it in the sponson. The center pod will come up out of the water much sooner and the depth finder will quit working.
