Are their any plans to bring up the boat, motors, drives and misc parts ?
If nothing else, it would be good to know for the future safety of hot boaters everywhere.

Due to the depth, it's probably not only too expensive, it's too dangerous. Probably not worth risking additional lives.

Given the tragic loss of life, I'm surprised they're not going to try and recover the boat to try and see if they can determine what went wrong. I know it'd probably be a hardhat dive at that depth, but once they mobilize hard hat equipment and personnel they can work for quite a while at 240'. Is there any other danger related to the actual geographical characteristics of that lake bottom?

Who's going to pay for it? You're talking about big bucks for a recovery of machinery from that depth.

They would typically raise it just to find out what happened, but being that the motors and drives (or so I read) were ripped from the boat, I don't know if they will or not.

i think the isurance co. will want to raise the boat before paying out any claim.200k is alot to pay out for a boat and will try to find a way to deny the claim based on the capable speeds and hp.just my thoughts.

You're right about the insurance CO. They had to recover a boat of mine that went to the bottom before they'd pay a cent. If anyone has the deep pockets to do it, they do. Their #1 goal always seems to be, spend $2 to avoid paying $1. With the ammount of litigation that could be involved though, they may spend a small forturne to attempt recovery.

How much could it cost to use one of those ROV's to run a cable down and hook it to the front hook on the boat or around something on the motors.

That's a thought, we use submersables all the time at work to pick small nuts and bolts up under 70 feet of water where no person could survive. Granted now you're talking 240 feet and a lake current. But some of these guys are real good with the robots. Again it's a money thing.

Picking up nuts & bolts and picking up a few tons of boat aren't exactly the same thing. You can bring it up 2 ways. Float it up or pull it up. If you pull it up you need a platform that is bouyant enough to displace a sunken boat and a winch powerful enough to lift it (This will most likely be a barge). The normal recovery method is to float it with bags. Using bags at that depth is tricky due to the exteme pressure change (1 atmosphere for every 33' of depth) Either way you're talking big bucks.

Didn't they just raise a Russian Nuclear Sub that way? It was in 5,000' of water. I think the ins guys will want to take a look at it.

Marv, I wasn't saying they could pick the boat up with a robot, just commenting on the previous post about hooking to the bow eye, in which case there is very little difference.
Summerlove, are you referring to the Kursk that was recently brought up? That was only in about 250 feet of water. The U.S. did attempt to bring a sub up in the early 70's using the Glomar Explorer. A clandestine operation that was alledgedly a research ship doing geological surveys. The sub was way down, maybe 5000 ft. They got it 99% of the way up and the thing broke in three. They did recover a few pieces and some bodies from that!

Craig,
It's still physics. The rig that Howard Hughes used to attempt raising the Soviet sub was HUGE! The Kursk required a HUGE rig to pull it off the bottom too and had the cooperation of the designers for making attachments to keep it from breaking into pieces.
Unless the boat was desiged to be lifted with the bow eye and transom hooks, they probably wouldn't support the full weight of the boat. The boat is probably 3-4 tons subtracting bouyancy factors for the water and if both engines are still in it (sounds like one may not be). If the boat got damaged is the transom in 1 piece? You still have to be able to counteract the negative bouyancy of 3-4 tons and have the power to pull it up. That's a big barge with a crane. I watched the operation to pull my 24' boat off the bottom (50') with bags. It took a day! It can be done but not without spending serious cash! It's not like hooking up to the winch and hauling it up on the trailer. If it were simple they'd just do it.

Just a thought...people posting about a engine not being in the boat, and Hot Boats Performance Evaluation driver[s] dislike of the 3/8-bolts to 1/2-bolts in the 24'HTM test. Also has anyone ever seen an "ad" for Lifeline in Hot Boat before? Strange

From what I've heard both engines are out of the boat and the transom is not intact
